The Severn Sport Tipster League is back for the ninth year and once again we have a whole host of hungry tipsters searching for the crown!

Once again this year we have a league of 13 tipster teams battling it out for the title of King Tipster. We have a new face in Josh McGill who will be representing local rugby this year.

Before we meet the competitors and see what their antepost picks are, here are the rules:

  • Each day our tipsters will pick three horses in each of the three selected races. They pick a horse to win (Winner), an each way shot (Each-way) and a Reserve. The Reserve takes the place of either the Winner or Each-way in the event of a non-runner or withdrawal.
  • The tipsters score a variety of points depending on how well (or not) their selections do in that race.
  • Each tipster will name a pre-festival antepost tip (this can be from any race across the week and will be worth double points)
  • They will also make a selection for the Gold Cup race on day four (this will also be worth double points)

With that being said, here is how the scoring system works for the Severn Sport Tipster League:

  • If the Winner or Each Way selection wins, the tipster scores 3 points
  • If the Each-Way selection places, the tipster scores 1 point
  • If the Winner wins the race and the Each-Way selection comes second, the tipster scores 5 points
  • If the Each-Way selection wins and the Winner comes second, the tipster scores 4 points
  • However, the tipster will score -2 points for each selection that fails to finish the race (e.g. pulled up, faller, unseated rider etc)
  • Tipsters will receive bonus points if they have big priced winners, with prices of 10/1+ receiving an additional 2 points and prices of 20/1+ receiving an additional 5 points.

Further to the scoring, our tipsters are also armed additional boosts they can play during the week and this year we are helping them out.

Before you could only play each of the three boosts once, but this year they can use five in total – with four boosts to choose from. The boosts are:

  • 2P – Double Points – the tipster receives double points for their selection.
  • DP – Double Price – the starting price of the tipsters’ selection will be doubled, thus potentially earning bonus points
  • XP – Extra Place – the tipster can pick an additional Each-Way selection in a race.
  • HP – Have a Punt – the tipster can pick any horse outside of the three selected races on the day to win. They are paid out 4 points for a win, 1 point for a place, but -2 points if the horse fails to place in the race.

The stipulations with the boosts are that the tipsters can use 5 boosts throughout the week and can only use each boost a maximum of twice throughout the week – although they are restricted to using each boost once a day (so they can’t use the Double Points twice in a day, for example).

Right, so now the rules are set – let’s check out this years tipsters and their antepost selections.
