Check out this month’s XI below:

Goalkeeper – Gary Pocock (Longlevens 5ths) – For goalkeeper, I was torn between the two Longlevens Stroud League Cup winners and went with Pocock, just. The TQs have had a wonderful season and Pocock is a key factor in that success.

Right Back – Anais Taylor (AEK Boco Ladies) – Anais was Player of the Match in the title clinching win over Weston. She was fantastic. In games like that some players are nervous and it becomes cagey, Anais made sure this didn’t happen. She flew into tackles, took her marker on and was effective in both final thirds. Set the tone perfectly.

Centre Back – Luke Benneyworth (Chalford) – Not just in the Team of the Month, Benneyworth is the first player on the shortlist for May’s Player of the Month after two Man of the Match performances in a row, in Chalford’s two biggest games of the season. Absolutely superb.

Centre Back – Nathan Jones (Abbeymead Rovers) – Nathan Jones scored an absolute worldie in the Stroud League Cup final win and was also very good defensively. I was told afterwards that I had witnessed one of the rarest sights in the game with him scoring, so I feel very lucky!

Left Back – Ryan Outram (Chalford) – The left back was down to either Rob Poole of Longlevens 5ths or Ryan Outram until Saturday night and Outram’s performance in the play-off win secured him in the team. A fantastic season for him as an individual and a team.

Right Midfield – Benji Cronin (Painswick) – Out of the Stroud League finals I saw, Cronin was the one player who was the unluckiest to lose is final. He was outstanding. He took his goal well, was dangerous throughout and it was really impressive.

Centre Midfield – Jake Portch (Slimbridge U18s)- Portch had an outstanding County Cup final in Slimbridge’s win and it caps a great season for him and the Young Swans. Sam told me that Portch was one of the best players on the pitch and should make the team.

Centre Midfield – Josh Hergest (Ramblers) – Another player unlucky to lose their County Cup final was Hergest, who scored a sensational free kick to put his side 2-0 up at the time. But it wasn’t meant to be for Ramblers on the night, although I was impressed with his performance.

Left Midfield – Xander Jones (Abbeymead Rovers) – The second player on the shortlist for Player of the Month and in reality, Jones was the player of the Stroud League Cup finals in my opinion (based on the games I went to). Direct, dynamic and brave in his decisions in the final third. Scored a good goal and was great on the day.

Striker – Andy Maryon (Chalford) – Maryon is the only player to keep his spot from April’s team after scoring in both of the league wins over Bibury and Tredworth. He has been a massive player for Chalford, this year in particular, and deserves his place.

Striker – George Parker (Chalford & Res) – The third and final player on the Player of the Month shortlist. His performance in the Cup final win over Painswick was superb, his confidence to do a Pogba-style run up for the penalty is outrageous and then he shows up against both Bibury and Tredworth and makes a difference in good wins for his side. Impressive from the young man.

Here is the XI in full:

As May was a month for the finals – we are having a full 11 player subs bench! The bench is:

Brandon Vance (Longlevens 4ths)
Shiyak Sutherland (Longlevens Reserves)
Alex Knight (Longlevens Reserves)
Lucy Atkinson (AEK Boco Ladies)
Corey Warrington (Tredworth Tigers)
Archie Tucker (Bishops Cleeve U18s)
Rhys Goodman (Painswick)
Gareth Davies (Abbeymead Rovers)
Tommy Bond (Bishops Cleeve U18s)
Jordan Burke (English Bicknor)

Jamie Lock (Chalford)

This month’s team will be managed by Chalford Management duo Ben Powell & Ben Newman. To have the pressure of having the title in their hands and having to beat their title rivals to clinch it, not play too well and win and then go and win comfortably in the play-offs is fantastic work and takes a special breed of leader to keep the team on the right path. Others in contention were Abbeymead’s Gary Mabbett and Longlevens 4ths/Slimbridge U18s’ Tom Read.

The Severn Sport Team of the Month will be back next season! Thank you to everyone for reading and enjoying it once again this season.
