Sam’s Section: Slimbridge and Forest Green bid to get back to winning ways

Well, here we again for another look back and towards all the footballing action in and around Gloucestershire this week.

And we shall start at Thornhill Park where Slimbridge suffered a surprising 7-1 defeat to a strong Mangotsfield United side on Tuesday night, sending them out of the GFA Challenge Trophy.

This result became the Swans heaviest defeat of the season after Mangotsfield’s first half scoring spree of five goals, highlighted their quality on the night.

Joint-manager, Adam Coyle, was nothing but apologetic post-match as he said: “Everyone involved at the club deserved much more than that result.”

The Swans will have the chance to get revenge as the two sides meet at Thornhill Park next Saturday in the Hellenic League Premier but first, they are on the road tomorrow afternoon.

Coyle and Tom Deakin will be hoping their side can get back to winning ways when they travel to Alfredian Park to take on bottom of the league, Wantage Town.

This could be the perfect fixture for the Swans to find some confidence back after Tuesday night’s defeat ahead of their rematch with Mangotsfield next week and their push for promotion back to the Southern League.

Now to League Two where Forest Green Rovers will also be looking to get back to winning ways as they host Tranmere Rovers at The New Lawn tomorrow afternoon.

Steve Cotterill’s side fell to 2-0 defeat at Crawley Town last Saturday, but it was possibly a game to many for Rovers in what was a busy week.

A 472-mile round trip to Cumbria in the midweek prior for a first win in 16-matches against Barrow, on a heavy pitch, to then travel once again towards West Sussex was less then ideal for Cotterill’s side.

But Rovers have now had a full week off to prepare for their clash with Tranmere where they will look to get the better of their opposition who defeated them 3-0 in the reverse fixture.
