AEK Boco Ladies secure league title in win over Weston-super-Mare

AEK Boco Ladies have completed their league and cup double with a 2-1 win over Weston-super-Mare Women at Greenbank Road.

A first half double from Lucy Atkinson saw Boco lead 2-0 at the break, before Ellie Burrows reduced arrears after half time to set up an anxious final half an hour – but Boco did well to see the game out in the end.

The win secures the SWWFL Northern Division title for AEK Boco, to go alongside their County Cup win last month, and they go into their final game of the season against SGS Olveston United next week as champions.

Boco started the game well, with right-back Anais Taylor setting the tempo with a couple of driving runs and crosses from the right.

The hosts were awarded an indirect free kick on 10 minutes, but Aimee Clark’s effort was blocked.

Abi Nicholas’ side got their reward for the early pressure when Lucy Atkinson was played in one on one and she calmly dispatched her effort into the bottom corner.

The goal settled any nerves around the ground and it meant Weston were forced to come out and attack Boco, although their play lacked any rhythm or quality in possession for the most part.

Atkinson added a second with seven minutes left of the first half, tapping home after Aimee Clark’s effort was spilled by Southey.

But Atkinson wouldn’t make it to half time, pulling up with a suspected hamstring injury after going to attack a cross into the box.

After the break, both sides looked for the crucial third goal. Courtney Adams had an effort saved by Southey, before Weston got themselves back into the game.

Ellie Burrows found space on the left hand side, cutting in on the corner of the box and firing into the bottom corner, past Leah Whiffen.

Credit to Boco, they looked to press forward and react positively – with Char Daly testing Southey after a cut back.

As the half wore on, the rain fell and the game became a bit scrappy – with chances coming at a premium for both sides.

Courtney Adams and Sasha Ferris had Boco’s best chances for a third – but Southey saved both, whilst Laura Jones headed Weston’s best chance off target.

The full time whistle cued the celebrations for Boco, who are worthy champions in the end.
