Sam’s Section: Hellenic Premier playoff race opens up & Rovers face Wrexham in penultimate away day
Another Thursday, another section to delve into all the footballing action that has and will go on around Gloucestershire this week.
And where better to start this week’s section then with a look at the now exciting climax to the Hellenic League Premier playoff race.
Last night Slimbridge’s grip on their playoff spot loosened as they had to settle for a point during an exciting 1-1 draw with Mangotsfield United.
This result confirmed Royal Wootton Bassett’s spot in the playoffs meaning there are just two spots left up for grabs.
These spots will be contested by three quality teams in Slimbridge (4th on 65 points), Highworth Town (5th on 64 points) and Cinderford Town (7th on 60 points) as Fairford Town in 6th have completed their season already.
The Swans will look to tighten their grip on one of the playoff spots this Saturday as they host their final game of the season against Wootton Bassett at Thornhill Park.
But all eyes will be on the Save on Tyres Stadium as Highworth tack on Cinderford this evening.
At the time of writing, Highworth have three games left to play whilst Cinderford have and extra game in hand with four left to play.
Tonight’s game offers to be a real battle as a victory for either side could have major implications on who grabs those final playoff spots.
Both sides then return to action on Saturday as Cinderford host bottom of the league Wantage Town and Highworth welcome Brimscombe & Thrupp to the Save on Tyres Stadium.
Highworth Town v Cinderford Town – (Hellenic League Premier- Thursday 11th – 19:45 kick off)
Highworth Town v Brimscombe & Thrupp – (Hellenic League Premier- Saturday 13th – 15:00 kick off)
Cinderford Town v Wantage Town – (Hellenic League Premier – Saturday 13th – 15:00 kick off)
Slimbridge v Royal Wootton Bassett Town – (Hellenic League Premier – Saturday 13th – 15:00 kick off)
Finally, to another big weekend in League Two as Forest Green Rovers are set for a trip down the Walk of Fame when they visit Wrexham on Saturday.
Rovers have just three games left in their fight for survival in the Football League and it doesn’t get any harder than a clash with promotion chasers.
Steve Cotterill will be hoping his side can bounce back after their narrow 1-0 defeat to Mansfield Town on Tuesday night.
Three points for Rovers could see them move off the foot of the table and sit level on points with Sutton United with goal difference keeping them in the drop zone.
So, eyes will also be elsewhere as their relegation rivals Colchester United and Sutton are also in action.
Colchester travel to playoff chasing Crawley Town and Sutton take a trip north for their clash with Harrogate Town.
Wrexham vs Forest Green Rovers – (EFL League Two- Saturday 13th kick off 15:00)
