Sam’s Sections: Top of the table clashes in GNSL and Stroud Division One with unbeaten records at stake

As we head into the third month of the season the league tables are really starting to take shape and some more than others with two divisions separated by just a couple of points.

The Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One and the Stroud League Division One have both got a number of teams all tightly contesting the top spots.

In the GNSL four teams are separated by just three points as Dursley Town sit top gaining maximum points (21) from their first seven games but have Tewkesbury Town, Longlevens Reserves and Whaddon United all chasing them down on 18 points each.

The top division of the Stroud League’s has the small number of five teams all separated by a single point with Taverners leading on goal difference and level on 16 points with Wickwar Wanderers.

Stroud United, Tetbury Town and Old Richians make up third to fifth with all three teams sitting on 15 points after their opening six or seven games of the season.

So let’s take a look at all of these teams fixtures this weekend which puts a couple of them up against each other which could start to open the packs up at the top.

Gloucestershire Northern Senior League

Leaders Dursley are not in action this weekend which leaves the door open for the chasing trio to stake their claim at the top of the table.

Tewkesbury will be looking to reclaim top spot but face a tough test at home against fifth placed Brockworth Albion who could themselves go above their hosts with a win, but Tewkesbury do boast a 100% start to the season in all competitions.

But all eyes may be on the Whaddon Recreation Ground as Whaddon (3rd) host Longlevens Reserves (4th) with both teams looking to open a three point gap on each other.

Whaddon’s form will make them slight favourites heading into this one having won all of  their last six matches.

Tewkesbury Town v Brockworth Albion (Tewkesbury School, Saturday October 5th, KO 2pm)

Whaddon United v Longlevens Reserves (Whaddon Recreation Ground, Saturday October 5th, KO 3pm)

Stroud Leagues Division One

Taverners and Wickwar head into the weekend level at the top after their goalless draw last Saturday and both teams face more difficult fixtures on Saturday.

The leaders Taverners travel to a stubborn Wotton Rovers looking to pick up their first win in three games whilst Wickwar look to extend their unbeaten start to the season as they host fellow top spot chasers Old Richians.

Something to note ahead of the Wickwar versus Old Richians game that in all seven of Old Richians game one team has scored three goals, with Richians achieving that in six of the matches.

Stroud United are not in action this weekend so will be keeping a close eye on the relevant fixtures as they prepare for their trip to a winless Horsley United next Saturday.

Tetbury are enjoying a run of four straight league wins and will be hoping to extend that run when they travel to Tuffley Rovers 3rds who held Old Richians to a 1-1 draw last Saturday.

Wickwar Wanderers v Old Richians (King George V Playing Fields, Saturday October 5th, KO 2:30pm)

Wotton Rovers v Taverners (Synwell Lane, Saturday October 5th, KO 2:30pm)
