Smith to take Longlevens Ladies armband for 2024/25 season
Lorraine Smith will be the new captain for Longlevens Ladies in the 2024/25 season, the club have confirmed.
Following winning the Gloucestershire County Women’s Football League Division Two title, Longlevens Ladies boss Rob McGeever confirmed the news that Lucy Dannatt had decided to step down as Captain after three seasons, to allow someone else the chance to lead the team on the pitch.
“Lucy felt that it was the right time to take a step back and let others have the opportunity to lead the team – although she will still be on the pitch giving her all,” said McGeever.
“Take nothing away from Lucy, she has been exceptional over the last three seasons as our Captain and she has overseen some tough times, as well as success this season, so I’m chuffed she is still staying on as Vice-Captain,” McGeever added.
Dannatt will take over the Vice-Captain role from Ashleigh Lloyd, who has stepped down from her role to focus on playing.
In reality, the changes won’t have too much of an impact to McGeever’s side, with a whole host of experienced heads in the side, they all tend to lead and encourage each other.
But with Dannatt deciding to pass on the armband, Smith was the obvious choice to take over.
Smith has recently been awarded the Player’s Player of the Season at the Longlevens presentation evening and came third in the Women’s Player of the Season category at the Severn Sport End of Season Awards.
McGeever has praised his new Captain, who he describes as a “born leader.”
“I am delighted that Lorraine has accepted to be Captain for next season. She is a born leader and has immense amount of respect within the squad.
I have no doubt that Lorraine will do a fantastic job with the armband in what will hopefully be another exciting season for us,” said McGeever.
