Gloucester City Women Reserves capped off a perfect first month of the season, beating Downend Flyers Reserves 7-0 at the TigerTurf Stadium.

Kate Ambrey and Nicole Lewis scored three apiece with Emine Akkurt adding a seventh late on as Nigel Field’s side made it five wins from five to sit top of the GCWFL Division Two table.

The win sees City’s Reserves lead the way ahead of Forest Green Rovers Development who have a game in hand and are also boasting a 100% record at this stage.

City opened the scoring in the third minute, with Lewis headed home at the back post from a Mirry Smith corner.

Lewis doubled her and her side’s tally on 9 minutes, turning home Kate Ambrey’s cross from close range.

City Reserves’ captain should have completed her hattrick in the 22nd minute, but she blazed over from close range after Zara Thompson had saved an initial effort.

Thompson produced a string of saves, in particular in the first half, to keep the scoring down to a minimum – including one on one saves from Hollie Handisides and Ambrey.

Akkurt and Zoe Gabb both rattled the woodwork before two goals in the final four minutes of the half gave the hosts a comfortable cushion at the break.

First, Lewis completed her hattrick – converting a square from Ambrey after Thompson had stopped her first effort.

Then right on half time, Mirry Smith dribbled through a couple of players before a challenge saw the ball fall for Ambrey, who swept home her first of the afternoon.

Gloucester added their fifth inside three minutes of the second half when Ambrey was played through on goal and the striker slotting past Thompson.

Ambrey soon added her third, latching onto an Alisha Kantorowicz through ball and absolutely lashing past Thompson.

Zoe Gabb was played in by her sister Claire, just before the hour mark, but she scuffed straight at Thompson – with Thompson also denying Ambrey a fourth.

The seventh came with just under 15 minutes to go, as Emine Akkurt skipped past two challenges into the box and firing into the bottom corner.

Gloucester saw the game out well to run out with all three points, with Downend hanging on in there well in the second half.

Next up for Gloucester City Reserves is a local derby at City of Gloucester Women next Sunday, whilst Downend Flyers Reserves hosting Mangotsfield United Reserves the same afternoon.
