Two goals in the final five minutes saw Bishops Cleeve run out 3-1 winners over Hereford Pegasus, ensuring a safe passage into the Hellenic League Challenge Cup Quarter Finals.
Cleeve started strongly as the wind and rain swirled around Kayte Lane and after a ball in from the left was nodded to the edge of the box, Steve Davies tested the keeper with a rasping half volley that was well saved.
But the hosts didn’t have to wait too long to break the deadlock as in the 8th minute a Jake Parrott free kick into the box was caught by the wind, evaded Blaine Waugh and was thundered home by an Elliott Kennedy half volley.
Kennedy, who gestured to our very own Ryan Butler after being omitted from the Severn Sport Team of the Month for April, looked fired up and set up Ieuan Crowe who turned in the box before seeing his shot blocked.
Archie Haskayne and Blaine Waugh then both had shots off target as Cleeve controlled the first 45 minutes.
Hereford Pegasus winger Carlos Moreira was cautioned for chopping down Michael O’Regan as Pegasus struggled for momentum or rhythm.
The second half started with a quiet first 10 minutes until out of nowhere Pegasus managed to string a few passes together and were behind the midfield line of Cleeve.
The ball was slipped in to Cawley Cox and as the referee played advantage Cox drilled the ball across Sam Gilder to level the game at 1-1.
On 58 minutes Blaine Waugh crossed for Elliott Kennedy who stretched but couldn’t reach the ball in before turning around in, signalling to the bench and falling to the floor.
Sam Blackie came on to replace Kennedy who had appeared to have pulled his hamstring.
With just under 15 minutes left on the clock the key moment came. Moreira, who was already booked, was adjudged to have dived to try and win a free kick and was shown a second yellow card and sent off.
Then the Pegasus man has jumped to his feet and taken an exception to something Kevin Slack had said to him. Moreira and the Pegasus players and bench were absolutely livid and remonstrations continued after the full time whistle.
With the man advantage for the final 10 minutes it always felt like Cleeve would put too much pressure on the Pegasus goal and that is how it came to pass.
After a long Leroy Odiero throw in was hooked goalwards by Mark Pritchett, the keeper could only palm the ball into the oncoming Blaine Waugh who put the Mitres back in front.
Then with two minutes left on the clock Kevin Slack rifled in a third from 18 yards after the ball was cut across the box to him.
In the end it was fairly comfortable for Paul Collicutt’s men and once more they showed their killer instinct in finishing the game off with two goals in a short space of time.
Cleeve will be one of the sides to avoid for the other quarter finalists that is for sure.
