Tuffley huff and puff but settle for a point against Calne Town

Tuffley Rovers came from behind to secure a point at home to Calne Town on Tuesday night, settling for a 1-1 draw despite a number of second half chances.

Calne started brightly and thought they had taken an early lead inside 2 minutes, but Matthew Russell’s effort was ruled out for a foul on Tuffley keeper Jack Copland from the ball in.

Both sides were slow to settle in the first 20 minutes or so of the game, although Rovers had a number of crosses into the box that just didn’t have anyone following them up to really test the Calne defence.

Warren Mann went down injured and after trying to play on for Tuffley he unfortunately had to be replaced, with Lucas Price coming on. Price coming on saw Lewis Bainbridge move to left back and Joe Shutt back to right back and the hosts just seemed more balanced.

Even though they seemed more balanced it didn’t stop Tuffley going a goal down on 23 minutes, as Copland was unfortunately to be lobbed by a Declan McStravick cross that looped in off the back post.

Calne nearly doubled their lead just before the half hour mark, but after the ball pinballed around the Rovers box Joe Shutt had got himself in a good position to head the ball off the line.

Suddenly that kicked Tuffley into gear and they peppered the Calne box with crosses that just couldn’t be turned home. From one ball in it fell to Shutt who dragged his shot into a crowd of players. The ball then fell to Jamal Lawrence who saw his shot blocked and the follow was then blasted over by Aaron Basford.

Lawrence was then caught up in a flash point five minutes before half time when he chased a long ball and ran into the sliding Calne keeper, Craig Edwards. The Calne Town defenders weren’t impressed and after pushing and shoving yellow cards were issued to Lawrence and a defender and we played on. It’s got to be said, the referee Dan Ellis handled the situation perfectly.

Then at the end of the first minute of injury time Lawrence swept home a cross from the right to send us in level at the break.

The second half saw Joel White, who was making his first appearance since re-signing for Tuffley, head over from a corner as Tuffley looked to go for the win.

Jack Copland was called into action just before the hour mark when he held a deflected shot well down low to his right, before Joe Shutt curled a free kick over for Tuffley as both sides exchanged chances.

Within 90 seconds Calne caught Tuffley on the break and after the ball was laid right to Josh Bright, the combination of Jacob Geddes and Joel White slid in to block the shot.

The final 15 minutes saw Tuffley in the ascendancy and had a number of chances to win the game.

First Dion Ellis-Clark had an effort saved well by Edwards, with the Calne keeper standing tall to beat away Joe Shutt’s effort from the resulting short corner.

Then with just two minutes left on the clock Lewis Bainbridge did well down the left side of the box before standing the ball up for Lucas Price to head towards goal. Price didn’t get all of the header and it was simple enough for Edwards,

The point saw Tuffley move onto 12 points and they sit in 15th spot in the Hellenic Premier ahead of a tough trip to Bishops Cleeve on Saturday, whilst Calne stay in 18th ahead of the visit of Hereford Lads Club this weekend.
