Severn Sport rename award in honour of late committee member

With April a matter of days away we have been busy at Severn Sport in regards to our End of Season awards. Last year we had a written piece where we recognised the efforts of national and local sides. Well this year, with more local teams covered it will be solely local players, coaches, members and fans that are honoured. The first way we are doing this is by renaming one of the awards.

Last year Slimbridge chairman Barry Gaye won our very first local hero award. The award is designed to acknowledge those behind the scenes, those whose efforts go almost unnoticed yet are paramount to the success of our local sides. Be they coaches, management, committee members or fans.

The award this year has seen nominations already thrown in our direction so we will open full nominations to you, the people of Gloucestershire and beyond. We will be asking you to nominate your local hero for the year.

Kelsey and I have thought about how to make this award in particular reflect the sentiment and emotion we feel towards everyone who puts in their hard work and dedication for their clubs and we are in agreement as to what we are announcing this morning.

For this year’s awards and beyond the local hero award has been officially renamed to the John Ashplant Local Hero Award in memory of the late Slimbridge AFC committee member John Ashplant, who unfortunately passed away earlier in the season.

Having met John just the once I can honestly say that what he showed me was his love of football, in particular for Slimbridge. From speaking to others who knew John better it is clear that this is the lasting image he has left with everybody. Well, we want to honour and commemorate his efforts with and for his club by naming this award after him.

We will be updating you all with details of the End of Season awards between now and the end of April with the provisional date of the awards, which will be broadcast live on Severn Sport, being the May bank holiday weekend.

Nominations for the John Ashplant Local Hero Award will open ahead of the final Southern League West Fixture on Saturday 28th April 2018.
