New Tuffley man Swales praises Cox as main reason he signed for Rovers

Former Cheltenham Saracens and Chalford midfielder Josh Swales has praised Tuffley Rovers manager Rich Cox for being one of the main reasons that he decided to sign for the club this season.

Swales has turned out for Tuffley in pre-season and has signed forms for the Hellenic League Premier Division club ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking to Severn Sport this week, Swales, 27, also said how he hopes to bring a bit of expeirence to what is a very young side at Glevum Park.

“Coxy has to be one of the main reasons for me why I signed” Swales said. “Playing for him previously at Charlton Rovers was probably the last time I managed to play the majority of the season and obviously he knows his stuff.

“In terms of what my best role is, or would be, personally I’ve got no idea! I’m just happy to fill/fit in in whatever way I can to help benefit the team.

“Compared to me, the majority of the squad is very young so I’m hoping to bring a bit of experience to the club where I can.”

As Swales mentioned, he is now a very experienced player in the Gloucestershire non-league scene having previously turned out for Chalford, Cheltenham Saracens, Brimscombe & Thrupp and Charlton Rovers among others.

So it’s only natural to draw comparisons between those different clubs and different squads, but Swales prefers to take each club in their own unique way and, with a fresh start at a new club, he hasn’t got any personal goals set in stone for the new season.

“It’s hard to answer [how Tuffley is different to other clubs] as all the clubs I’ve been at have been brilliant in different ways and the lads have always been class wherever I’ve been” Swales said.

“The main thing I can say about Tuffley is that the squad is so young and hungry. Of course there’s a lot of room for improvement as with any squad but the potential for this squad, with a couple more additions, could be huge.

“After the disruption of COVID and along with my injuries, it’s hard to set myself personal targets but I suppose I just want to try and start as many games as possible and help the squad as best as I can.”
