Brimscombe fall to defeat to Thornbury following Chalmers treble
Callum Chalmers scored his second hattrick of the season as Thornbury Town saw off Brimscombe & Thrupp, 4-1, at the Meadow on Tuesday night.
After a turbulent couple of months, Brimscombe now find themselves one win, five defeats from their opening six league games, with a -19 goal difference at this stage.
Marcus Wormwell’s stunning free kick separated the two sides at the break and after Raiyan Ahmed levelled inside three minutes of the second half, Brimscombe failed to capitalise on their best spells of the game.
But two goals in three minutes for Chalmers saw Thornbury secure the points, before he added his third from 12 yards in stoppage time.
The misery was compiled further into injury time, when Brimmy captain Luke Finch was given a second yellow card for a challenge in the middle of the pitch.
Brimscombe’s run isn’t set to get any easier, with a trip to Corsham next Tuesday, before hosting Longlevens on Saturday7 September – with what already looks like a must win game against fellow strugglers, Pershore Town the following weekend.
For Thornbury, they head to Fairford next Tuesday, before hosting Tuffley Rovers and Lydney Town, before heading to Cirencester Town – in a run that could shape their aspirations for the first half of the season.
Tuesday’s game started slow, with both sides seeing a lot of the ball but struggling to use it effectively.
Chalmers had the first shot of the game, but it was easily gathered by Billy Thomas at his near post.
From there Brimscombe began to control the tempo of the game, but lacked a cutting edge in the final third and the final ball just wasn’t good enough.
Luke Finch fired an effort onto the hill behind the Thornbury goal, before Dan Martin found space on the right but crossed straight to a defender’s feet.
Paul Fahy counter attacked from a Thornbury corner on 25 minutes, but former Tuffley Rovers and Stonehouse Town keeper Adam Clark did well to turn his effort out for a corner.
With just under 10 minutes to go until half time, Marcus Wormwell produced the best bit of quality of the game as he arrowed a 30+ yard free kick right into the top corner, giving Billy Thomas no chance.
Brimscombe nearly levelled before half time though, but Clark produced good saves to tip a header onto the bar and then palm away a Joe Stokes effort.
Brimscombe came out for the second half much earlier than Thornbury and caught their visitors slacking in the opening minutes.
After a corner was only partially cleared, the ball fell to Raiyan Ahmed at the back post and he cut back, before curling into the far corner. Parity.
Clark once again denied Joe Stokes, who looked the most likely to find a way through for Brimscombe before he was substituted with just under 20 minutes to go.
And with just over 10 minutes left on the clock, Chalmers fired his side back in front after a ball in from the right was blocked into his path – with the forward making no mistake from close range.
Brimscombe pressed for a second equaliser and were caught out with a sucker punch, moments later. A ball up the Thornbury right wasn’t dealt with by Leroy Odiero and Chalmers fended him off before slotting below Thomas.
Chalmers was brought down in the box in injury time, giving him the chance to secure another hattrick – which he duly obliged.
Then with moments left, Luke Finch was given a second yellow card after slipping into a mistimed tackle. It was unlucky, but about right.
The Lilywhites’ attention now turns to a trip to a Corsham Town side who are five wins from five league games, on Tuesday night.
