With the New Year upon us, the FA are due to publish a list of step 7 (County League) sides who have applied for promotion into step 6 for the 2024/25 season.

January may only be a few days old, but our friends at Football In Berkshire have taken a look at a list that has appeared on the nonleague matters internet forum and from a Gloucestershire perspective there are a few interesting observations.

In the list (see below), only two Gloucestershire County League sides have seemingly applied for promotion into step 6 – with both the Hellenic League and Toolstation Western League an option for Rockleaze Rangers and Sharpness.

it is also worth noting that the unofficial list doesn’t include current Gloucestershire County League runaway leaders, Avonmouth, who have confirmed via social media that they have applied for promotion into step 6.

In terms of the Hellenic League, there are a number of sides within the Herefordshire League who have appeared to have applied for promotion, including Wellington FC, Ledbury Town and New Dales Vale.

With only one side provisionally set to be relegated from Hellenic League Division One, the chances of the winner of the Herefordshire league being the side entering the Hellenic is high.

The current title race in the Herefordshire League sees New Dales Vale, Ledbury Town and Wellington separated by just three points – with Wellington having games in hand in 3rd.

Another potential feeder league that could potentially see a promotion into the Hellenic League is the Wiltshire Football League – with all of Larkhall Athletic Development, Kintbury Rangers, Amesbury Town and Trowbridge Town all applying for promotion.

If the promotion place was to go to the league winners, then Amesbury Town who be the potential beneficiaries as it stands.

Obviously there are a lot of twists and turns left between now and the end of the season and it is worth noting that there is always a chance more promotion places open up during the close season due to team withdrawals/ voluntary relegations.
