The Severn Sport Team of the Month includes players that have stood-out in the featured games during the previous month.

In December we only covered 9 games collectively due to the Christmas break and bad weather during the month.

Friday 6 December – Slimbridge 2-3 Longlevens
Saturday 7 December – Tuffley Rovers 1-1 Fairford Town
Sunday 8 December – Cheltenham Town Women 2-1 Norwich City Ladies
Tuesday 10 December – Slimbridge 5-1 Longlevens
Saturday 14 December – Stonehouse Town 0-2 Shortwood United
Sunday 15 December – Whitchurch Ladies 7-2 Longlevens Ladies
Tuesday 17 December – Slimbridge U18s 2-2 Tuffley Rovers U18s
Wednesday 18 December – Longlevens 1-0 (A-A) Brimscombe & Thrupp
Saturday 28 December – Fairford Town 1-0 Longlevens

Check out this month’s XI below:

Goalkeeper – Joe Wright (Shortwood United) – In a month that saw so many great goalkeeping performances, Wright just gets the gloves as his role in earning his side three points at Stonehouse was crucial. A great keeper, part of a side going in the right direction.

Right Back – Henry Birkett (Fairford Town) – Birkett played right back against Longlevens and considering he was being played “out of position” he did really well and stood out as one of the better performing players on the day. Would be an attacking element of a back five this month.

Centre Back – Ollie Long (Longlevens) – Ollie Long scored against Brimscombe and even though it won’t be included in the record books due to the abandonment, it had topped off a good couple of weeks for the defender. He was unlucky to be on the losing side at Fairford.

Centre Back – Macaulay Herbert (Tuffley Rovers) – Similarly to Long, Herbert stood out during the game against Fairford. With Jamal Lawrence being one of the best strikers in the league and reducing him to just a penalty speaks volumes as to how good Macaulay played.

Centre Back:- Joe Tryner (Shortwood United) – The final part of the month’s central defence is Joe Tryner for how solid he was against Stonehouse. He is such a good defender and whilst I could sit here and say that he should be playing higher, being part of a Shortwood side to reach the Hellenic Premier would mean the world to him.

Left Back – Jacob Rodgers (Slimbridge) – The left back slot was a straight shoot-out between Sam Kelly and Jacob Rodgers and whilst Kelly scored two during the month, I went with Rodgers to just highlight how good a month he has had – even though Slimbridge have struggled for consistency.

Midfield – Shaun O’Connor (Longlevens) – Potential recency bias, but O’Connor was very impressive during the game against Fairford in particular and he continues to be such an important player as to how Longlevens tick. With a number of young players in the squad, O’Connor continues to be a leader on the pitch and an experienced head to learn from.

Midfield – Max Fowler (Slimbridge U18s) – Fowler really impressed Sam in the U18s game against Tuffley and whilst he didn’t receive MOTM, for his position he was immediately on the shortlist. Slimbridge have a fine history of seeing players transition into the first team and Fowler will be looking to build on his performances this season.

Midfield – Tianna Chant (Longlevens Ladies) – Even though Longlevens Ladies lost 7-2 at Whitchurch, Chant was superb for her side. She was a constant threat and took her goals really well. In a season that has seen Levens adapt to a new division, she has been a great asset in Rob MecGeever’s squad.

Striker- Aimee Clark (Whitchurch Ladies) – Last season’s Women’s Player of the Season at the Severn Sport End of Season Awards took 90 seconds to score in front of us during the win over Longlevens and alongside her two goals, she also assisted plenty and showed her class on the day.

Striker – Ilarna Nche (Whitchurch Ladies) – I was really impressed with Nche in the win over Longlevens, scoring goals and being as energetic in the last minute than she was in the first. On such a difficult day, conditions wise, Nche just didn’t stop and deserved to win the game for her own efforts alone.

Here is the XI in full (via a brand new, fancy graphic):

The subs bench includes 7 players to impress over the month and in full, they are below:

Drew Oliver (Tuffley Rovers U18s)
Jack Gardiner (Shortwood United)
Omarion Harrison (Tuffley Rovers U18s)
Tiger Harris (Stonehouse Town)
Sam Kelly (Longlevens)
Luca Kapadia (Slimbridge)
Una Lue (Cheltenham Town Women)

This month’s team will be managed by Lydney Town Co-Managers Lee Smith & Adam Dix after claiming three wins in a row over Christmas to see their side build some serious momentum for the New Year.
