Sam’s Section: History made and drawing their own success, was picking Stonehouse as team to watch correct?

Almost a month ago I last reviewed some of my teams to watch and fast forward to now where my overall team to watch, Stonehouse Town, are enjoying a fairly successful start to their season.

It was one of my more out there predictions at the start of the season but with the return of Ian Soule and success in winning the Severn Sport Shield, the Magpies caught my eye and proved that they had what it takes to compete this season.

And compete they have as on Saturday they created history by reaching the FA Vase First Round proper for the first time defeating Hellenic League Premier high flyers, Mangotsfield United on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

That was after Soule’s side had already stunned Corsham Town on penalties following a goalless draw in the First Qualifying Round and Soule’s side will now be preparing to face Wessex League Premier side, Downton FC.

Away from their Vase triumphs the Magpies sit mid-table in possibly the trickiest Hellenic League Division One in recent times suffering just one defeat, winning twice all whilst holding out for five draws against strong oppositions.

Draws on the road to Bewdley Town, FC Stratford and Redditch Borough with the other two coming at home to Cheltenham Saracens and Chipping Sodbury may become highly important points for the Magpies the end of the season.

And the side’s two wins couldn’t have come at better times defeating local rivals, Shortwood United 1-0 at Meadowbank before travelling to a struggling Carterton to win 2-0, both early in the season.

Yes, Soule’s side are winless in six but just one defeat all season and a major run in the Vase might be beyond the club’s wildest dreams at this early stage of the season.

But Soule and his team will be looking to take all three points from their game on Saturday September 28th when they host a struggling Newent Town at Ben’s Takeaway Stadium.
