Fairford Town Manager Jamie Reid has expressed his pride for how his club, Roman Glass St George and the match officials handled a serious injury to Danny Way in Saturday’s abandoned game.

After a collision on 30 minutes, Way was treated on the Cinder Lane pitch by Sports Therapist, Ollie Begley, before the game was called and he was taken to hospital for scans.

Following the news, social media was full of support for Way and on Sunday night the club were able to provide an update that he was released from hospital after the scans came back all clear for a serious head, back or neck injury.

And Reid says that the central midfielder is in good spirits following the incident.

“Danny’s well being was of course, imperative,” said Reid. “It was brilliant getting the feedback through after his CT scan that there was no bleeding to the brain, and no neck or spinal injuries.

He was suffering with headaches and sickness on Sunday, but in his own words that’s a small price to pay and it could’ve been a lot more serious.

Danny is such a good person and he’s fondly thought of by everybody at the football club and everyone he knows – as the amount of support he received on social media shows,” Reid added.

Reid and Director of Football, Jody Bevan, both took to social media to praise the club and their Sports Therapist, Begley, for how they handled a scary incident and Reid admits that it is now important to rally round him to show support for his efforts this weekend – as well as the whole squad after seeing their stricken teammate in a bad way.

“I’m always proud in what we do at the football club from top to bottom, but everyone at the game on Saturday showed class throughout. So again, our thanks goes to the opposition and all supporters and officials.

We’ve got a gem in Ollie [Begley], he’s still relatively young at the age of 24, but he’s so thorough and meticulous in his role as Sports Therapist.

He was very composed and we know we’re in good hands with him at the club.

As with a few lads, I’m sure he was still shaken though and it’s important we look after him and the group this week,” said Reid.

Way will now be set to miss a number of matches at a crucial point of the season. Fairford find themselves just a point outside the play-off spots, and with the former Bourton Rovers man set to miss games with Thornbury Town, Westfields, Royal Wootton Bassett Town and Malmesbury Victoria.

With the potential of Way being back for the final few games of the season, Reid told Severn Sport that is important for his side to stick together and look to build momentum whilst Way is recovering.

“Danny’s rehab will be monitored in stages, with us being hopeful that he may be able to return after 21 days, with all being well,” said Reid.

“But with Jamal [Lawrence] suspended and Henry Birkett awaiting a scan on his knee injury he picked up at Pershore, plus a couple more on the injury list, we’re going to have to pull together as a squad and hopefully build momentum for this run in – with play offs being the ambition for us as a club.

Look, we know it’s going to be difficult, undoubtedly, but we’ll certainly be giving it our best shot!” Reid added.

Next up for Fairford Town are two away days on the bounce, with Reid’s side heading to Thornbury Town on Saturday and Westfields the following Tuesday (4 February).
