Outram’s penalty decisive as Chalford beat City Devs in shoot-out
Gloucestershire County League side Chalford booked their place in the GFA Senior Amateur Cup Third Round, beating Gloucester City Development on penalties at the TigerTurf Stadium.
After a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes, the two sides faced the prospect of a penalty shoot-out to determine who would go on to head to Cheltenham Civil Service in the next round – with Ryan Outram’s penalty sending Chalf through, following heroics from keeper Duane Portlock, who saved two.
Gloucester City Devs had taken the lead when Owen Caraftis rifled home from 20 yards, before George Parker thumped home a header just after the half hour mark.
Both sides created chances, but ultimately the teams couldn’t be separated in the final hour or so and the lottery of penalties was needed.
Caraftis and Ben Minnican swapped converted efforts, before skipper Tyler Butler fired his side ahead.
Josh Swales saw his effort saved by City keeper, Brayden Rodriquez – however Portlock would palm Connor Muir’s penalty onto the bar and away.
Andy Maryon levelled the shoot-out before Sam Jun, Ben Alfred and Sterling Diaz all scored for City, whilst Chalford replied through Jamie Lock, Luke Barstow and Luke Brunsdon.
Luke Copland’s effort was then saved by Portlock, who threw himself to his left, leaving former Cirencester Town Development man Outram the chance to win the tie, a chance he duly took with a confident penalty.
Chalford will now head to Cheltenham Civil Service in the next round on Saturday 16 November, with Civvy beating Barnwood to book their place in the Third Round.
The game started with both sides exchanging speculative efforts from distance, before Caraftis worked space on the edge of the box and sent his effort in off the foot of the post.
From there City were in control and could smell blood. Caraftis dispossessed Andrew Roberts on the edge of the Chalford box, but was denied by Portlock, before the striker then curled wide with his next chance.
Chalford settled down slightly and only really got going once Parker rose highest to send his header crashing past Rodriguez to restore parity.
And following the leveller, Chalford dominated until the break – with Outram thundering an effort off the crossbar, before Roberts headed wide from a delightful Adam Foster cross.
Travis Cooke had an effort saved by Rodriguez, before Portlock did well again to keep out another Caraftis chance at the back post.
Andy Maryon was gifted a chance to run through on goal in the opening 30 seconds of the second half, but after pressure from the recovering defender, Maryon couldn’t squeeze his effort past Rodriguez.
Caraftis was slipped through by Elijah McDonald, who had leapt on a poor pass from Brad Moore, but Adam Foster got back to clear the ball as it trickled past Portlock.
Substitute Ben Minnican got to the byline before cutting back to Roberts, who saw his effort well blocked.
Both sides were committed to the cause and as the fouls and yellow cards began to add up, Chalford’s experience just told too much in the end.
Tyler Butler stung the palms of Portlock as the game ticked into the final 10 minutes, whilst George Parker latched onto an Adam Day through ball, only to trip on the ball as he entered the box.
Ben Powell and Nat Buckland will be pleased with their side’s efforts, but know that they weren’t in their best of form, so will need to improve if they want to continue their County Cup run.
Next up for Chalford is a trip to Stoke Gifford United next Saturday, whilst Gloucester City Development are back in Hellenic League action on Tuesday night, when they head to Newent Town in the Floodlit Cup.
