“I’m in form and loving football” says Bird as brace during Dursley take down extends impressive scoring record
Brockworth Albion forward, Ashley Bird, says his impressive form this season has been fuelled by his managers’ trust following his brace against Dursley Town on Saturday.
With this performance alone, Bird believes it shows how much he’s enjoying his football right now and thanks managers Tom Willetts and Mark Temple for their trust in him.
“I’m inform, I’m loving the football, my fitness is good and it’s great I’ve got the confidence of the coaches as their main number nine from the start.
“All I’m doing is taking those chances and enjoying my football this year,” Bird said to Sam Yapp following the game.
The forward opened the scoring inside 10 minutes with a towering header before completing his brace just before half time from the penalty spot taking his tally to 14 goals in all competitions this season.
Fellow forward Matt Cairns turned provider for Bird’s opening goal during his player of the match performance before scoring an incredible distanced effort himself during the first half.
Bird and Cairns again linked up in stoppage time at the end of the game to help create Osmah Abazied goal completing the scoring and Bird was full of praise for Cairns top performance.
“We’ve got great chemistry me and Matty and it’s easy to put balls away in the back of the net when he puts them on a plate like he did today for me.
“He’s a great player and played very well today again,” he said.
Albion duo Bird and Cairns were both named in Severn Sport’s Team of the Month for November following their display, with Cairns also shortlisted for the Player of the Month as well.
But despite winning the game in what look like a comfortable fashion, Dursley put up a fantastic fight even with nine-men after Ash Caldwell and Jack Dolbear saw red in the first half.
This was something Bird noticed during the game but is happier that his side managed to get the result over the line to extend their unbeaten run to six games.
“With them getting two men sent off early doors it killed the game off for us. We were already 2-0 up with a dominant performance from us all.
“Dursley upped their game, which they had to having the two man deficit.
“We had more time than we thought and almost let the occasion get the better of us but again we’ve won 4-0 and got done what we needed to do.
“We did drop off massively, almost too much time on the ball but it was a professional job, we got it done and came out with a few goals and a clean sheet which is all that matters,” he said.
Albion, who remained fourth in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One, now sit just five points off the top three with Bird wanting his side to challenge as high as possible.
“We obviously went through a sticky stage, losing a few games and dropped some points.
“We just want to see how high we can go and see how many points we can achieved to challenge as high up the league as we can, whilst pushing on in the cup alongside it,” he said.
Brockworth are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Charfield, aiming for a fifth successive win, whilst Bird hopes to continue his incredible scoring run.
