Gloucester City Women scored two in each half as they ran out 4-1 winners over Bristol & West at Meadow Park, on Sunday afternoon.
A double from Kate Ambrey either side of a Beth Clatworthy leveller saw City go in at the break in front, before second half strikes from Beth Smith and Rakiya Morgan-King added gloss to the scoreline in the second half.
But Bristol & West nearly took the lead inside the first sixty seconds, when Emma Cove broke the offside trap, but dragged her shot wide from outside the box.
Lucie Cummings had City’s first shot of the game, as she found space on the left corner of the box and her effort whistled just wide on 8 minutes.
Midfielder Chloe Jarvis, who was impressive throughout the game, worked her way into a yard of space on the edge of the box before firing just wide, then within sixty seconds took aim from range and her effort this time flew just over.
Centre back Bethany Smith then stepped up and rifled a free kick just over as the hosts pressed for an opener.
It came just after the half an hour mark as left winger Hannah Clarke went on a mazy run and carried the ball a good 40 yards, getting into the box and the byline before squaring for Ambrey to tap home and break the deadlock.
Within five minutes though Bristol & West were level. It came from as Beth Clatworthy got a run on her marker at the near post and headed in a corner inside the back post.
City pressed for a second to go into the break ahead and should have scored when Chloe Jarvis headed over from six yards after the Bristol & West keeper came for a corner and got nowhere near it.
In first half stoppage time the visitors appeared to have City penned in their own left back corner, but they played their way out of trouble, before finding Zoe Gabb in the centre circle.
Gabb swivelled to play a diagonal for Ambrey, who charged into the left corner of the box and curled her effort passed Rouse in goal and City went into half time deservedly ahead.
The second half started with Bristol & West having a chance to score early in the half.
It came from another corner and after the ball pinballed around the City box, it was poked over the bar and the host’s lead remained intact.
Gloucester made their visitors pay five minutes later when Beth Smith brought the ball out from the back and hit an unstoppable effort from 30 odd yards to make it 3-1 and make the game more comfortable for her team.
Either side of half time City introduced two 16 year olds who they hope for big things from in Rakiya Morgan-King and Megan Prout as they continued to press to extend the lead.
Then with as we approached the final 20 minutes the fourth came. As the ball fell loose on the half way line, Jarvis flew into a 50/50 challenge and whilst she remained down after the collision, her ball forward found Morgan-King down the right.
The substitute cut in and smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 18 yards and the points were safe.
In the end Gloucester City were good value for their win, but once again Bristol & West didn’t roll over and could have let their heads drop at 3-1 and then 4-1, but they kept going to the end.
