Gloucester City claim crucial three points thanks to Robinson winner
Theo Robinson scored his sixth goal for Gloucester City, earning his side a crucial 1-0 win over Scarborough Athletic.
Robinson’s seventh minute effort was enough to see the Tigers claim their first win since back to back victories at the end of January and their first home win since before Christmas.
The hosts were able to see the game out well, with centre back duo Spencer Hamilton and Ty Duffus impressing on the day.
Mike Cook’s side could have won by a bigger margin, however Joe Hanks stepped up to blast a penalty over the bar, just before the hour mark.
The result sees Gloucester reduce the gap to safety to four points, however they have played two more than King’s Lynn, three more than Rushall Olympic and four more than Banbury United, after this weekend’s games.
Both sides started positively, but it was the hosts who would strike first in the seventh minute.
After Brandon Liggett produced a great block at one end, the hosts countered, with Robinson cutting in on the left corner of the box and curling into the top corner.
Alexander Wiles fired wide with Scarborough’s first effort of the game within two minutes, before former City man, Dom Mchale, scuffed an effort straight at Jared Thompson.
Teddy Rowe curled over, before Brandon Smalley struck the post before half time, as a corner was pulled back to him.
For Scarborough, a lot of their goalbound efforts were blocked by despairing challenges from the City back line and at half time it was job done so far.
Scarborough introduced Harry Owen at the break, and in all honesty, they looked much better for it.
Aiden Rutledge found space about 25 yards out, but fired straight at Thompson.
Then just before the hour mark, Brandon Smalley twisted one way, then the other, before being tripped in the box – but Joe Hanks had his head in his hands after firing over the T-End.
Scarborough started to control the ball, but City remained dangerous on the counter.
Green turned on the edge of the box, before striking the foot of the post from 18 yards.
Smalley found himself clear down the left hand side, with ten minutes to go, but stumbled as he charged through on goal, and his effort was saved by Ryan Whitley.
In the end, Gloucester were able to see the game out quite comfortably, with Scarborough huffing and puffing in the closing stages.
Next up for Mike Cook’s side is a trip to Alfreton Town next weekend, before back to back home games against Boston United (9 March) and league leaders, Tamworth (12 March).
