Tuffley Rovers completed a double over their Welsh counterparts Undy AFC this afternoon as both their first and u18s side notched up convincing wins.
A hattrick from Brett James, along with an Ash Bird double and a Cam Williams strike saw Tuffley pick up an impressive 6-1 win over the Welsh League side.
The goals came after Rovers defender Macaulay Herbert inadvertently sent the ball into his own net, giving Undy a lead which they nearly doubled had it not been for a decent Kane Winman stop.
Brett James’ first saw Tuffley bring the scores level just before the half an hour mark when he volleyed home after a corner had fallen to him.
Tuffley went in front just before the break when a deep cross was knocked back across goal, leaving Cam Williams an easy tap in.
Rovers kicked themselves into an extra gear after the break and began to win the 50/50 battles all over the park. They extended their lead just after the hour mark when James intercepted a loose ball by the Undy defender, played a neat one two with Ash Bird and smashed the ball home.
Three soon became four and then five with 10 minutes left. Ash Bird coverted from inside the six yard box after great play by Kieran Alder down the right. James completed his hattrick after a clipped ball into Bird fell to the winger and he delightfully chipped the ball over the rushing keeper.
Bird had the final say with three minutes left when he took a long ball down, carried it thirty yards into the Undy box and rifled home his second on the day and Tuffley’s sixth.
Other positives include 90 minutes for Herbert, White & Alex O’Leary at the back as well as second half keeper Luke Merchant who looks set to complete a dual registration from Cirencester Town after his display.
Earlier in the day Tuffley Rovers U18s saw off their Undy U18s rivals 3-1 after Niall Priday put them in front. After Undy equalised a Jai Underwood corner flew into the back of the net before forward Charlie Bacon chipping in a well worked third.
Tuffley Rovers conclude their pre-season schedule on Tuesday night before a trip to Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday 4th August to start their Hellenic League season.
