Newent Town First Team Manager Ben Stringer is hoping his side can spring an upset to advance into the First Round of the FA Vase when they travel to Hellenic Premier side Longlevens this weekend.
After beating Tytherington Rocks 2-0 a fortnight ago, Stringer spoke to us about setting up the tie with Longlevens – with Stringer admitting his side would be underdogs going into the game and that Newent needed to keep their minds focused on their games leading up to the FA Vase tie.
Since then Newent remain winless in the Hellenic League Division One West and were beaten by a clinical Hereford Lads Club in the Banbury Litho Floodlit Cup on Tuesday night and Stringer admitted that whilst his side have lacked a killer instinct, all of his players have been itching to be included in Saturday’s squad.
“Tuesday’s performance was actually very good at times and we played some of our best football this season. Unfortunately though we just made a few mistakes that ultimately cost us and we are just lacking that killer instinct at the moment.
We have tried not to think about the game at Longlevens too much in the lead up, as we have other games to contend with and we always look at things a game at a time. However now the tie has come around everyone has been chomping at the bit to make sure they are going to be in the squad,” Stringer added.
Ahead of Saturday’s game both sides are missing a number of players, with the hosts missing as many as 10 first team players and Stringer has confirmed to Severn Sport that Newent will be missing a couple of first team faces as well.
“It’s a shame as the squad isn’t quite at full strength at the moment, but we aren’t too far off really. There are a few guys that have recently picked up niggles and one or two with illness, but all that means is someone else gets a chance to prove themselves”
This season has seen Newent compete in the FA Vase for the very first time and after advancing into the Second Qualifying Round, Stringer is hoping that a win on Saturday will not only be a moment of history for the club, but it will also help bring the squad closer together as their league season continues.
“A win on Saturday would be a great achievement for us for sure and it would bring the squad closer together, which would be great. But let’s not get too carried away, we are looking at one of our toughest tests as a squad this season so let’s hope Lady Luck is with us come Saturday. Whatever happens we look to make the club proud.” Stringer said.
