Slimbridge centre back Christien Turner had a debut season to remember at Thornhill Park last season as he swept home both the Manager’s and Players’ Player of the Season at the end of season awards and now he is looking ahead to a massive season for the Swans.
Turner joined the Southern League Division One South side just over 12 months ago from Brimscombe & Thrupp and immediately endeared himself to the Swans fans with his hard hitting and tough tackling defensive approach.
The defender was one of Slimbridge’s most consistent performers during a tough season that saw his side finish comfortably above the relegation zone in the end, whilst failing to find wins consistently.
Turner looked back at the end of his first season at Thornhill Park ahead of their first game of the 2019/20 season this weekend, an FA Cup tie with Edgware Town.
“The end of season awards were brilliant,” Turner said. “I was very proud picking up two awards in my first season and to be acknowledged by your fellow players is special and getting the Gaffer’s award as well – made all of that hard work worth while!
The Slimbridge fans are fantastic as well as the people behind the scenes, a real family club who have made me feel right at home,” Turner added.
After a successful season individually, Turner has been a part of an impressive Slimbridge squad in pre-season that has seen a wave of new talent join the ranks. Amongst the players joining the Swans are defenders Joel White and Will Peck.
The club announced further signings this week including goalkeeper Alex Avenell and forward Rhys Sarson and Turner believes the squad is now ready to make an impact in the Southern League this term.
“We’ve got a good squad going in to the season, Drive adding Lums and Dion [First Team coaches Alex Lumsden & Dion Chambers] to the coaching staff is a massive boost for us and we are more prepared this year and have been working hard in training.
The quality has shown through in our preseason games and hopefully we can hit the ground running.
A good partnership is always essential at the back; Korey and I jelled well last season and with him still injured Digger [Joel White] has come into the team and settled really well,” the former Brimscombe & Thrupp man said.
After an impressive first season, Turner was named vice-captain for the 2019/20 season and he admits that the season opener this weekend has been a long time coming and is hoping to reward the club with an exciting cup run.
“I’m buzzing about the game to be honest. A couple weeks before preseason I was itching to get back so can’t wait for kick off on Saturday! The FA Cup is a fantastic competition and I love playing in it. A good cup run can boost a teams confidence and I know every club could do with the prize money a win brings,” Turner said.
