Slimbridge beaten but not outclassed by Frome Town

Slimbridge were defeated but were by no means outclassed by Southern League Division One South leaders Frome Town, as the Swans suffered a 2-1 defeat at Thornhill Park.

The Swans, who won the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign, went into the game off the back of a 4-1 drubbing at Bideford last weekend and they included winger Marley Thomas, who re-signed for the club from Cinderford Town earlier this week.

And it was Thomas who had the first chance of the match, after Frome keeper Kyle Phillips shanked his clearance to the former Sharpness man. Thomas though could only fire wide from 30 yards.

The visitors had the best chance of the first 45 minutes though, with Jonathan Davies leaping onto a poor touch by Dion Chambers, before seeing his shot blocked by the recovering defender’s sliding challenge.

Davies felt the wrath of his teammates just before the break when he fired wide from 25 yards, when h had options either side of him.

After cancelling each other out for the first 53 minutes of the game, the deadlock was broken when Slimbridge keeper Lewis Adams brought down Frome’s Matthew Smith after the ball came loose.

Davies stepped up to send Adams the wrong way and Slimbridge were unlucky to be trailing.

From there the Swans began to play some gorgeous football, with Rhys Sarson flicking the ball over his own shoulder before volleying towards goal. Phillips though did well to keep the ball out and turned it away for a corner.

Sarson was then on the end of a great flowing move just before the hour mark. After Sol Wanjau-Smith found Will Peck down the left hand side, the full back pulled the ball back to Adam Price, who in turn back heeled to Sarson who fired against the bar.

Rex Mannings nearly made it 2-0 moments later when he was slipped in down the left side of the box. After shaking off Aaron Nesbeth, his shot hit the on-rushing Adams before spinning towards goal, only for Nesbeth slid in to hook the ball off the line.

Mike Ford fired over for Slimbridge with 20 minutes to go as the hosts went in search of an equaliser.

But, with two minutes to go, on one of the rare occasions that Frome managed to create space on the edge of the Slimbridge box, the ball was threaded through to Mannings who calmly slotted it past Lewis Adams to make it 2-0.

Within 90 seconds Slimbridge carved open another glorious chance and this time they took it! After Will Peck found space down the left again, he laid it square to Myron Turner and kept his run going.

Turner threaded his pass into Peck, who back heeled for Sarson to step onto the ball and drill it into the bottom corner from just inside the box. It really was a beautiful goal.

In the end Frome held on with the win and whilst Slimbridge were unlucky to lose the game, they didn’t do enough to have won it themselves.

The result sees Slimbridge drop to 10th in the division, ahead of their trip to Paulton Rovers next weekend, whilst Frome host 3rd placed Larkhall Athletic next Saturday.
