SevernSport’s greatest Premier League players ever! Part 1

20th February 1992. The birth of the greatest league in world football. I am of course talking about the Barclays Premier League. Since its formation, over 46 different teams have graced the top flight of English football and with them, came some of the best players in world football. So welcome then to the SevernSport team’s look at the players – who we think – are the greatest to ever play in the English top flight.

First up it’s me. Hi, I’m Kelsey. Now I don’t actually support any of the teams in the top flight, in fact I don’t even support a team in the Football League system; non-league all the way for me. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy watching the Premier League, however.

Now for me, picking the best player to ever grace the Premier League is a similar decision to choosing which university I wanted to go to, there are so many options and they all boast excellent portfolios. So picking one wasn’t easy, but in the end I decided to go for the greatest goalscorer to ever wear a Premier League sponsorship symbol on his sleeve: the French wizard, Thierry Henry.

Thierry Henry is Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer with 228 goals.

What can you say about Thierry Henry? The man who has scored more goals in an Arsenal shirt than any man in the history of the club’s existence (228). Well put it this way: you don’t get a bronze statue of yourself erected outside one of the biggest clubs in the world’s ground without earning it through some completely game-changing commitment to your team.

Henry joined Arsenal from Juventus in 1999 after Arsenal gaffer Arsene Wenger tempted him to the Premier League. A lot of credit has to go to Wenger, as he transformed Henry from a wide-man (a position Henry hated) to an out-and-out striker, a position he made his own and he rapidly became one of the most prolific in this role in the entire league.

The Frenchman’s tremendous movement, speed and finishing made him a constant threat to defences not just in the Premier League, but across Europe in the Champions League and on the international stage for France. Thanks to his goal-scoring prowess and phenomenal skill, Henry won the Premier League Golden Boot four times during his Arsenal career and in 2008, was voted as Arsenal’s greatest player of all time by a fan vote.

The best player to ever play in the Premier League? I certainly think so. What do you think? Get in touch on Twitter on @SevernSport!
