Severn Sport Shield 2021: Ryan and Kelsey’s Team of the Tournament

The Severn Sport Shield was once again a resounding success in 2021, with Cinderford Town running out 4-1 winners over Tuffley Rovers in the final on Saturday, and Fairford Town claiming third place with a 7-1 victory over Newent Town in the earlier kick-off.

With four games on show across the week, it was only natural that we were going to see plenty of standout performances and that we did! So of course we couldn’t let the tournament pass without putting together our ‘Team of the Tournament’.

Football is a matter of opinions, naturally, so this year we have both compiled our own seperate Team of the Tournament, with four subs each. We’ll start with Ryan’s team…

For his subs bench, Ryan has picked Joe Shutt (Tuffley Rovers), Ian Herring (Fairford Town), Tom Boyle (Newent Town) and Jack Meredith (Cinderford Town).

Speaking about his selections, Ryan said “I couldn’t believe myself when I picked my team and went for a 3-5-2 formation, Big Sam would be absolutely disgusted! On a serious note though, the quality of performances that we saw over the week was up there as one of the best we’ve seen since we started The Severn Sport Shield.

“Picking the Starting XI was ridiculously tough and I’m just grateful we could pick some subs as well otherwise too many excellent performances would have gone unrecognised!”

Now, onto Kelsey’s team…

On his bench, Kelsey has got Ian Herring (Fairford Town), Luke Payne (Cinderford Town), Fin Brown (Newent Town) and Dom Kent (Tuffley Rovers).

“I can only really echo what Ryan has said to be honest, the quality of this year’s tournament was exceptional. You’ll notice that a lot of the players we have in our teams are similar, but I think that speaks for the level of consistency those players showed across the week” Kelsey said.

“A big thank you to everyone who supported The Severn Sport Shield this year, especially Cinderford Town for being fantastic hosts throughout the week.”
