Pre-season 2019 on Severn Sport: Tour & Shield

Summer without football is boring. Well, based on the weather lately the term summer can be used very loosely but either way, it feels like an age since we were joining the Hellenic League Groundhop during the Easter weekend. Thankfully, football is back….well nearly.

Pre-season is nearly here and we can’t wait. During the last week or so and over the course of the next, teams all around the county are returning for long and gruelling training sessions before they kick off for another long football season.

For everyone who has followed Severn Sport for the last two seasons will know that we love pre-season as it gives us an amazing chance to visit as many of our sides as possible and watch some competitive friendlies in the run up to the big kick off in August. From the now annual pre-season tournament, the Severn Sport Shield to the also now annual pre-season tour – we will be all over the place to take in our local football fix.

Starting with the Severn Sport Shield, here is all you need to know about following pre-season in Gloucestershire right here on Severn Sport.

As we confirmed last month, all four of Cheltenham Saracens, Gloucester City U18s, Longlevens and hosts Tuffley Rovers will be facing off in this year’s Shield, at Tuffley’s Glevum Park.

The draw was made last month and we found out that Tuffley will host Gloucester City U18s in the first semi final on Tuesday 9th July, with Cheltenham Saracens given the home changing room against Longlevens the following night (both games 19:45 kick offs).

The two losers will face off in the Third Placed Play-Off at 12:30 on Saturday 13th July, with the final being contested between the two winners at 15:30 that afternoon.

As it was with last season, if any of the four games end as a draw after 90 minutes, then the side’s will face the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

This season we will be collecting for all week and will be joined on the Saturday by local charity Goals Beyond Grass, a charity bringing Powerchair Football into the county and promoting inclusion in sport to young and vulnerable people.

Ticket prices for the tournament will be £5 for adults, with concessions prices at £3 and we can confirm that U16s will have free entry to all four games across the week! Value for money right there.

To support Goals Beyond Grass and find out more about what they do, visit You will also be able to donate to their cause at the Severn Sport Shield 2019, between Tuesday 9th and Saturday 13th July.
