Philp loving life at Shortwood after late winner against Thornbury

Shortwood United left it late as they came from behind to beat Thornbury Town 2-1 this weekend, with Adam Philp netting the winner with the final kick of the game.

Wood sit in 8th in the Hellenic League Division One West table after Luke Soule levelled from the penalty spot before a dramatic late winner.

After the game we spoke tom Adam Philp about the game and asked him to describe the feeling of scoring a last gasp winning goal.

“I’ve scored many a goal, but to score with literally the last kick of the game, wow, there’s no better feeling,” said Philp.

“It felt great to guarantee that the team got the 3 points that we thoroughly deserved and I missed a chance early on and came very close to getting on the end of a cross in the second half, so it was looking like it wasn’t going to be my day.

But when the cross came in, my first thought was to gamble at the back post and thankfully it paid off!” Added the former Cam Bulldogs striker.

The win comes at a great time for Shortwood, as they showed the perfect reaction to their 3-0 defeat in the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup at Tuffley Rovers in midweek and Philp has called on his side to use the victory as a platform to kick on for the rest of the season.

“It was massive that we got back to winning ways after the cup defeat to Tuffley and whilst it’s always nice to go on a cup run, the main objective this season is to finish in the top 5 in the league.

It’s imperative we keep a winning mentality from now until the end of the season. We’ve been hit badly with injuries and few suspensions, but the lads that have come in have done brilliantly.

They say that wins bring confidence so hopefully we can build on the win against Thornbury and go on a nice run from now until the end of the season,” said Philp.

Philp, who recently joined the club, told Severn Sport that he is delighted to have received the call to join Shortwood and has thanked everyone at the club for helping him settle in.

“Shortwood is a massive club,” said Philp. “When I received the phone call from Jas and Blythey [Shortwood management duo Jason Scrivens and Matt Blythe] I really couldn’t turn it down.

The lads have really welcomed me in and to see all the hard work that the committee and the volunteers put in up there, it really is an honour to be part of the club. The support we get home and away really is phenomenal so I’d like to thank everyone at the club for that,” added Philp.

Next up for Shortwood is a trip to Tytherington Rocks next weekend after their fixture with Malmesbury Victoria for midweek was postponed due to Malmesbury having to play Brimscombe & Thrupp in the Floodlit Cup.
