On This Day: Cinderford secure Southern League title after Ethan Moore double

Here at Severn Sport we enjoy taking a trip down memory lane, especially during this lockdown period within the UK, and we have a big one for you.

On this day in 2016, myself and Matt Yates headed to the Causeway for Cinderford Town vs Taunton Town in the Evostik Southern League South and West and it would turn into a day the Foresters wouldn’t forget.

It was my first ever trip to Cinderford as a place, let alone to watch football and all I knew going into the game was that if Cinderford won, they would be champions.

But there was an incredible backstory to the game. First placed Cinderford Town were hosting third placed Taunton Town on the Tuesday night in the penultimate match day of the 2015/16 season, with Taunton then set to play second placed side Banbury United on the final day on the Saturday.

This means we went into the game knowing that if Taunton beat Cinderford then they too could still win the league, meaning that the 90 minutes we were about to see was massive, for three clubs!

From a broadcasting perspective it was great. We had a number of Taunton Town and Banbury United fans listening and tweeting us and it was up to Matt and I to ensure that everyone knew what was happening and from my perspective I felt we captured it perfectly.

The first half flew past without a goal and tension was building throughout the Causeway. Then, within five minutes of the restart, Ethan Moore did what he does best and scored the all important goal to put Cinderford within touching distance of glory!

From memory Moore and Lee Smith in particular ran Taunton absolutely ragged in the second half and on the hour mark, Moore added a second to ensure that John Brough’s Cinderford side would be going up to the Southern Premier as champions with a game to spare!

It was in the early days of Severn Sport and one of the first commentaries we did that wasn’t Gloucester City and to have been there to capture the moment meant everything to Matt and I and was a landmark for us to build on the following season.

Listen to the goals below and re-live one of the most exciting nights in Cinderford Town and Severn Sport’s history.
