Martin and Kavanagh see red as Longlevens suffer Bassett defeat

Longlevens were beaten 2-1 by Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Wednesday evening in a fiery encounter at Saw Mills that saw Luke Kavanagh and manager Craig Martin dismissed for the hosts.

It was a disappointing night for Levens, who started very slowly and could have been two or three goals down early on.

Kane Winman, who replaced Ash Wintle in goal for Longlevens, pulled off a great stop to deny Bassett as a free kick was flicked towards his top corner.

From the corner Mark James headed the ball down towards goal, but his effort was hooked off the line by Jonty Welch.

Welch had Longlevens’ first effort of the game but could only send his shot comfortably over as the hosts struggled for any rhythm early on.

Just past the 20 minute mark and Bassett took a deserved lead. After a neat one two on the edge of Longlevens’ box, Gio Wrona rifled home leaving Winman no chance.

Myron Turner had an effort blocked after neat build up down the other end, before Welch’s effort nearly squirmed through Bassett keeper Gary Aulsberry, but the keeper kept the ball out.

Towards the end of the half referee Kevin Dudley began to let the game get away from him, giving a couple of dubious fouls for either side to frustrate everyone involved.

Less than 5 minutes into the second half and Bassett doubled their lead. After Winman shanked his kick straight to winger Elias Youseff, the Bassett man calmly slotted the ball home to make the task even greater for the hosts.

Longlevens found a way back into the game on the hour mark though, as Brad Martin was pushed to the ground as he went up for a header from a corner. Penalty.

Shaun O’Connor stepped up to blast the ball down the middle and half the deficit.

Bassett’s Nick Stanley was then booked for a shoulder barge. It wasn’t as foul but the defender’s name was taken.

Longlevens midfielder Dave Rich caught substitute TJ Bohane as both players went up with a high foot for the ball. The visitors wanted a red card but Mr Dudley brought out the yellow card.

Brad Martin nearly equalised for Longlevens with a spectacular effort. After chesting the ball down on the turn, the forward volleyed just wide.

With five minutes left Luke Kavanagh received a yellow card for blocking off his man and reacted angrily. A straight red card followed to leave the hosts starting at defeat.

Manager Craig Martin was then sent off from the technical area after his reactions following the dismissal.

It was a bad night for Longlevens, who travel to Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Saturday as they look to get back to winning ways ahead of a big six pointer with Reading City next weekend.
