Longlevens to utilise full squad against Newent with 10 first team players missing

Longlevens will be looking to continue giving squad players minutes this weekend against Newent Town, with no less than 10 first team players away for the FA Vase tie.

On Wednesday night the Hellenic Premier side brought in players who had appeared in the Reserves this season including Jack Cornell, along with 43 year old coach Kacey Johnstone – who played the full 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over Moreton Rangers in the Banbury Litho Floodlit Cup.

Ahead of Saturday’s game with experienced players like Brad Martin, Ed Smyllie and Captain Shaun O’Connor missing, First Team Manager Craig Martin admits he may even have to be named in starting XI for the game.

“Wednesday was all about getting minutes into lads who have been on the fringe and around the squad and there were some stand out performers for me in the game like Jack Cornell, Josh Watts and Will Emery.

You’ll find that every team goes through a period of missing players, but for 10 regulars to be away in one hit is not really good planning for e and Tommy [Joint Manager Tommy Callinan],” Martin said.

“As a coaching team we will decide tomorrow if I’m going to be starting or not because I’m only just getting over the Bishops Cleeve game on Bank Holiday Monday.” Martin joked.

Saturday’s visitors Newent set up the tie with a 2-0 win at Tytherington Rocks in the First Qualifying Round, but they are yet to taste victory in the Hellenic League Division One West this term. However, Martin anticipates a difficult afternoon for his side and believes Newent’s league form goes out of the window this weekend.

“We watched Newent against the Reserves during pre-season and I was very impressed with them and from what I’ve been told about them in midweek, it sounds like they were a little hard done by.

Everyone wants to get one over a side in the league above so I expect the same from Newent. When it comes to competitions like the Vase league form isn’t important, so we need to turn up and respect them to get the right result,” Martin told us.
