Tristan Haswell says he is “fitter and stronger now than I have been in a very long time” and can’t wait to get started after completing his move from Bishops Cleeve to Cinderford Town.
The Foresters confirmed the signing of the former Tuffley Rovers defender on Wednesday morning and the move sees Haswell become Stephen Cleal’s second signing since taking the helm at the Southern League side.
Speaking to Severn Sport, Haswell said he is looking forward to a new start and a new challenge at the Causeway.
“I’m certainly looking forward to the upcoming season at Cinderford, it’s a new challenge and one I can’t wait to start,” said Haswell.
“Playing Southern League again was one of the main attractions, I feel like I have unfinished business as when I was fit I played well, but unfortunately it was one of those seasons that passed me by and obviously ending in a bad injury,” Haswell added.
As mentioned Haswell re-joins Stephen Cleal, who left Bishops Cleeve for Cinderford Town earlier in July and the defender admits that the chance to play for Cleal again was a factor in his decision.
“Sooty [Cleal] was a big part of me joining Cinderford to be honest,” said Haswell.
“From experience I’ve found the importance of playing for a manager that backs you and you get on with. I’ve played under Soots for two and a half seasons at Cleeve and he was excellent with me during my time out injured and my season back last year.”
Haswell has been a player who has seen his progress hindered by injury over the last few seasons and after recovering from an ACL injury the defender remained injury free last season and Haswell believes his progression during the campaign shows he is ready to move up to Southern League football.
“I’ve been delighted personally with last season,” said the defender.
“One of my main goals coming back was staying injury free and playing as much football as possible, which I have done. But staying injury free hasn’t been through luck! I’ve changed a few lifestyle choices and I have had regular PT/Rehab sessions from the start of my injury to this current time.
But I believe I’m now fitter and stronger now than I have been in a very long time and whilst I have always believed I have the quality to play southern league football I just needed the opportunity to show that again, which thankfully Cinderford has given me,” Haswell added.
After the confirmation of Haswell’s signing, Cinderford also confirmed the signing of Ash Davies from Fairford Town for the 2020/21 season. Davies played for Cleal at Bishops Cleeve before moving to Fairford last season and is Cleal’s third signing at the Causeway, after Haswell and full back Luke Payne.
Severn Sport are delighted to confirm that with Sam Turl’s departure from Cinderford Town all but announced we have reached an agreement to swap our Player Sponsorship for the 2020/21 season to Haswell and Head of Programming Ryan Butler had this to say:
When we found out Sam was likely going to be leaving Cinderford, Kelsey and I discussed who we should sponsor instead and decided to wait and see who Stephen Cleal signs. As soon as Tristan was confirmed as coming in we knew he would be our man for the season.
Tristan epitomises everything we like in a player and with his recovery and the way he is bouncing back from his injuries and improving by the game, we are delighted to be able to sponsor him and be a part of the next step in his career.
