BREAKING: Gloucestershire club resign from league

Shortwood United has tendered its resignation from the Evo-Stik Southern League West, effective from the conclusion of the 2017/18 season.

A statement on the league’s website said

Owing to the level of financial commitment required at Step 4 and the fact that the Club’s major sponsor income has been lost going forward, the difficult decision has been made by the Club.

The League wishes Shortwood United FC the very best for the future and hopes to see them again before too long.

Shortwood have released the following statement on their official site.

Regretfully it has become necessary for Shortwood United Football Club to relinquish their registration in the Southern League at the end of season 2017/2018.

This has been a difficult decision taken in the most difficult of circumstances but constant financial demands to improve facilities have recently been further compounded by loss of a major sponsor’s income from the end of this season. This combination will leave the Club in a vulnerable financial position should we attempt to continue competing at Southern League level.

In light of this Shortwood United FC’s Committee consider it prudent to seek football at a lower step and more localised level where operating costs and demands for facility improvements will be moderated.

Messages have been pouring in for the club, who have responded on Twitter.

The resignation brings the question of whether or not the relegated team from the Southern League West will be granted a reprieve.

Currently Bishop’s Cleeve look favourites for the drop, sitting five points off safety. Barnstaple Town and Slimbridge also look in danger of finishing as the bottom team, with the two facing off at Thornhill Park this evening.

All of us at Severn Sport would like to relay our best wishes to those at Shortwood United for the future.
