This past weekend saw the Quarter Finals of the GFA County Cups from the Senior Amateur down to the Minor cup take place and there were headlines to be made in the quest for a Semi Final place.
Brockworth Albion put Whitecroft to the sword as they eased to the semis with a 6-0 win. Jordan Alderman scored a hattrick as Mark Mulraney’s men made it four wins on the spin in all competitions and will one of the favourites if not the favourite to now lift the cup later this year.
In their way will be Harrow Hill, who beat Tuffley Rovers Reserves 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes. Hill will fancy their chances to go all the way and were in fact the last team to beat Brockworth, claiming a 2-0 win a few weeks ago in the league.
Elsewhere there was an upset as Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two leaders Andoversford were beaten 3-2 on penalties by fellow newly promoted side Charfield, after another 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.
One of the stories of the day in the whole of Gloucestershire though was the comeback produced by Barnwood United against Newent Town Reserves of the Hellenic League.
Two early goals for the visitors in the first ten minutes saw Newent race to a 2-0 lead, but goals from Keenan Rankin-Woodhouse and Josh Philpotts saw the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League side claim a 2-2 draw before the hosts completed the job with a 4-3 win in the shoot-out.
On the Severn Sport Show on Dean Radio on Saturday morning Ryan Butler said that Barnwood had the “knack of producing in cup football” after their run in the Reg Davies Cup last season and after the game we spoke to Assistant Manager Craig Salter about what the result means to the players and whether he feels his side can win the competition.
“We’re always happy to win any game,” said Salter. “Credit to the boys though, we showed alot of character coming back from two goals down, but it’s a Quarter Final so nothing to get carried away with at this stage.
The two goals were individual mistakes, there wasn’t any need to change things. We just needed to keep working hard and if we stuck at it we knew we could create chances to get back into the game.
I think we have the players to be doing better than we are in the league, with a lack of consistency regarding selection hurting us this season, but we showed we are capable of good performances and maybe the cup run is a reflection of that.
When you look at the teams left we are probably the underdogs in many people’s eyes. But this is a cup and anyone can win it, especially if you get to a semi final. We still have a big job to do in the league and as I said we won’t be getting carried away at this stage. If anything it makes us more determined to show our quality more in the league,” added Salter.
All four teams now await the draw for the Semi Finals which are to be completed and announced by the Gloucestershire FA in due course.
