Former Gloucestershire captain to make England Over 50s debut in action packed weekend

As part of our recently added cricket coverage in and around the county, Gloucestershire Cricket Board’s Steve Hill takes a look at an action packed weekend of cricket this weekend. 


There are three Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Cup first round ties scheduled for Sunday, including a home date for Rockhampton against Frocester.

Cheltenham entertain Tewkesbury while Stroud play hosts to Stapleton. There is also one clash in the Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Trophy with Oaksey home to Ashton Keynes. All matches start at 1.30pm.

The West of England Premier League continues moves to produce a qualifier for the ECB’s Vitality Club T20 with six more first round triangulars on Sunday.

Bedminster, Clevedon, Frenchay and Midsomer Norton along with Taunton St Andrews and Trowbridge all host group matches.

Taunton Deane, Biddestone, Bridgwater, Bath and Winterbourne are already through to the second round.

Group Four (at Clevedon): 10.30am, Clevedon v Wembdon; 1.30pm, Wembdon v Knowle; 4.30pm, Clevedon v Knowle.

Group Six (at Bedminster): 10.30am, Bedminster v Brislington; 1.30pm, Brislington v Congresbury; 4.30pm, Bedminster v Congresbury.

Group Seven (at Midsomer Norton): 10.30am, Midsomer Norton v Frome; 1.30pm, Frome v Bristol; 4.30pm, Midsomer Norton v Bristol.

Group Eight (at Frenchay):10.30am, Frenchay v Downend; 1.30pm, Downend v Bristol West Indian Phoenix; 4.30pm, Frenchay v Bristol West Indian Phoenix.

Former Gloucestershire captain Mark Alleyne will make his debut for England Over 50s on Sunday against Wales at Welwyn Garden City (12.30pm).

The all-rounder, who won ten one-day caps for his country, has been called up on the back of his fine form for Gloucestershire Over 50s who last season reached the ECB Championship semi-finals.

Also on Sunday, four members of Gloucestershire’s Over 60 squad are bidding to break into the England age-group squad.

Spinner John Courtney, wicketkeeper Nigel Belletty plus all-rounders Kenny Earl and Martyn Bowyer all head to Banbury for a trial match ahead of games this summer against Australia and Pakistan.
