Former Cheltenham Town, Gloucester City & Forest Green Rovers forward Lee Smith has committed his future to Tredworth Tigers for the 2019/20 season, despite having offers from sides at a higher level.
Smith, who joined as player/co-manager of the Stroud League Division One side during the 2018/19 season, has spoke to Severn Sport ahead of a crucial summer for his side as the Tigers look to build on their strong end to the season.
“My aim was to get promoted with Tredworth next season when I took over and the aim is in full effect as we speak. After our strong end to this season we finished 3rd and I’m working on lads to stay whilst trying to add a few new lads so that we can push for the title next season.
I know it’s going be hard but I’m confident in my ability and know how, so I’m excited for it and hopefully new sponsors will help us as a club grow off the pitch too.
We’ve got Rich Gammon helping with the kit so I’d like to thank him for his support and for everyone else who is helping the club – they make a real difference.
Yes, it is true that other clubs higher up in the pyramid have been in touch and I’ve had a chat with them, so in some ways it’s been good to know that I’m now in the manager loop as such – but I’m still focused on playing too. What will benefit me most is if we can win some trophies here at Tredworth.” Smith added.
A strong end to the season that saw Tredworth win 6 out of the 12 league games Smith has been a part of, saw the Tigers steer themselves clear of the relegation zone and finishing 3rd by two clear points as co-managers Smith and Adam Dix look to finally secure promotion to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League next term.
And after scoring 15 goals in 14 starts for his side, Smith admits promotion next year will be extra special as it will be the perfect way to mark Tredworth’s 20th anniversary.
“We know that next season will be tough and we are looking to put together a pre-season schedule to test our players and make sure they are firing from the beginning.
We are back in July and I can’t wait to get out there again. We want to get promoted next season to make the 20th anniversary of the club a season to remember and I am excited to see what the future holds.”
