FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round-up: Wins for Fairford and Brimscombe on tough night for Gloucestershire sides

Competitive football is back! Although it could have come back in a better way for our sides in FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round on Tuesday night.

Bishops Cleeve made the long journey to Watford and would come back empty handed after being beaten 1-0 by Oxhey Jets.

A goal inside 11 seconds put Cribbs on course to turn Newent Town’s FA Cup fairytale into a nightmare, as the Western League side ended up winning the tie 3-1.

Morgan Davies’ strike the highlight of the night for Newent in their first ever FA Cup appearance.

The winners of the night were Brimscombe & Thrupp and Fairford Town, who both advanced into the next round.

Brimscombe got there by claiming a 2-1 win at North Greenford United after goals by Jack Smith and Oli Barnes put them 2-0 to the good.

The hosts were awarded a soft penalty which gave them hope, but the Lilywhites held on to set up an all-Gloucestershire affair with Cinderford Town on 12th September.

Also in FA Cup and not Hellenic League action on the 12th will be Fairford after they edged out Lydney Town in a Gloucestershire derby.

After Sam Elliott was dismissed for bringing down Charlie Bailey, Nick Stanley rifled home the free kick to see Jody Bevan’s men set up a Preliminary Round tie with Edgware Town.

Other results of note include Coventry United beating Stourport Swifts 3-1 to set up a visit to he Jubilee Stadium to take on Evesham United and also Cirencester Town must wait until tonight to find out where they are heading for their Prelim tie as Flackwell Heath head to Roman Glass St George on Wednesday evening.
