Ieuan Crowe bagged a brace as Bishops Cleeve won at Stonehouse Town 5-1 to advance into the next round of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup.
Cleeve started the game well and had a flurry of corners into the box, but manager Paul Collicutt would have been disappointed with the lack of quality on the balls in to the area.
Ash Caldwell curled the game’s first shot over, before Blaine Waugh had a decent effort from the right side of the box saved by Buster Davies in goal for Stonehouse.
Waugh didn’t have to wait too long though as he closed down a clearance and leapt on the loose ball before firing low and through Davies to break the deadlock on 18 minutes.
Then just before the half hour mark Mark Prtichett curled a free kick just wide of Davies’ right hand upright as the visitors threatened.
Two goals in as many minutes made Stonehouse’s task even greater and pretty much sealed the tie. Frustratingly for the hosts it came just after they started to build some momentum going forward.
But after a cleared corner was recycled on the left by Cleeve, Stonehouse man Aaron Lowe was the unfortunate party as he nodded the resulting ball in past his own keeper to make it 2-0.
With their next attack, Cleeve flew forward and after a shot was deflected up into the air, Crowe nodded past Davies and you felt the tie was sealed.
Just before half-time Ash Caldwell hooked the ball into the top corner after the visitors managed to get a corner beyond the first man and the former Brimscombe & Thrupp midfielder slotted home.
The second half was a bit of a stalemate with both sides knowing the game was secure for Cleeve, but that didn’t stop Stonehouse captain Alex Kibble having his say on proceedings.
After Crowe bundled the ball over the line following a shot that crashed off the bar to make it 5-0, Kibble hooked a cleared ball back into the Cleeve box and the ball looped up and over Matty Wieczorek to put Stonehouse on the score sheet.
Bishops Cleeve advance into the next round and now have two away trips to look forward to in Ardley United on Saturday and Easington Sports the following weekend.
For Stonehouse, they head to Shortwood United on Saturday before a home fixture with Malmesbury Victoria next Tuesday night.
