Cleal issues rallying cry as Mitres enter final 8 games this weekend against Holmer Green

Bishops Cleeve manager Stephen Cleal has called for his side to come together as the Mitres look to defy the odds and secure promotion from the Hellenic Premier.

Two weeks ago Cleeve drew 0-0 at Tuffley Rovers and appeared to have faded out of the running for the Hellenic Premier title, but after local rivals Tuffley then beat league leaders Brimscombe & Thrupp last week – the door has opened up once again for Cleal’s men.

Cleeve find themselves 10 points off the top but with four games in hand over their local title rivals, but whilst 2nd place Wantage have it in their hands – Cleal knows that there can’t be anymore slip ups in the final run of games, despite the draw at Glevum Park.

“We can only look at ourselves so regardless of who beats who and who does what, it doesn’t really matter. But you I guess that on reflection our point at Tuffley isn’t a bad one, considering they then beat the league leaders.

Momentum is good at any level of football and in particular Hellenic level. The fact that we’re unbeaten in the league in 2019 is good, but we need to kick on in the next 8 games and see where it takes us.”

Since the result at Glevum Park, Bishops Cleeve have seen forwards Brad Martin and Joe Bates depart the club whilst Jacob Davidge has returned from Evesham United.

We asked Cleal about the impact the transfers could have on the next run of games for the Mitres, but the Cleeve manager remains positive that Davidge can hit the ground running.

“It’s not about Brad Martin or Jacob Davidge regarding the next run of games, it’s about Bishops Cleeve as a club. With Brad and Joe Bates both leaving we needed to add to our forwards and to bring our top goalscorer from one of our most successful years back, it was a no brainer really.

I’m sure Jacob knows what I expect and I am sure he will deliver but we need everyone in our talented squad to perform. If we can then we stand a chance to defy the odds and gain promotion back to the Southern League.” Cleal added.

The next week is a vital week for Cleeve and it will ultimately help shape their season. After the visit of Holmer Green on Saturday, the Mitres take on Bitton in the Semi Finals of the GFA Challenge Trophy.

Next Saturday Cleeve then welcome local rivals Lydney Town to Kayte Lane and they know that three wins in the next three games gives them a great chance at some silverware this season.
