Stephen Cleal has made his first signing as Cinderford Town manager, with the Foresters confirming that full-back Luke Payne had joined the club.
Payne, who joined Bishops Cleeve from Tuffley Rovers to play for Cleal, becomes to first signing of the new era at the Causeway.
The transfer was confirmed on Monday morning by the Southern League club on their website and the 25 year old will play a crucial role in Cleal’s attempt to build a squad strong enough to challenge for the Southern League Division One South next season.
In the statement on Cinderford’s website, both Payne and Cleal commented on the transfer.
“I’m looking forward to get back playing Southern League football and continuing to work with Sooty [Stephen Cleal]. I can’t wait to get going this season with Cinderford,” said Payne.
Manager Cleal added, “Fogues [Payne] was someone I definitely wanted to bring with me and I’m pleased he wanted to come across – he’s a lad I enjoyed working with and he’s got real quality both defensively and offensively. He is one the fans will warm to for sure.”
With the news that Payne is joining the club, it appears that full-back Sam Turl is likely to be one of the Cinderford players to leave the club.
After former manager Paul Michael left the Causeway to join Yate Town, it was widely tipped that a number of players would make the move as well.
Whilst nothing is confirmed, Severn Sport understands that Yate Town are due to make announcements on player signings in the coming days and we expect Turl to be amongst them.
