Brimscombe & Thrupp held off Moreton Rangers to advance into the Third Round of the Hellenic League Challenge Cup, winning 2-1 at the Meadow on Wednesday night.
Ed Major’s early strike broke the deadlock and it had initially appeared like the hosts would be in for a routine evening.
Major, who continues his comeback from a hamstring injury, was influential in the first 45 minutes down the right hand side and opened the scoring with a driven finish from the corner of the box.
From there though both sides struggled for momentum and struggled to carve out any real opportunities at goal for the next 20 minutes or so.
Out of nowhere Josh Burford leapt onto a stray pass and charged towards Adam Thomas in goal for Brimscombe, but fired straight at the keeper in what was Moreton’s best chance of the half.
Major and Jonty Welch had shots blocked for Brimscombe before Harlie Price went close twice. His first effort was well saved at the near post, whilst his second saw him send a spectacular overhead kick just over the bar.
The second half started perfectly for Brimscombe with Forest Green loanee Dylan Morgan doubling their lead inside the first three minutes of the half.
Morgan cut in on the left side of the box, before seeing his shot too hot to handle and nestle in the bottom corner.
Thomas was called into action just before the hour mark when he clawed away a deflected effort that was going back across him.
Welch rattled the crossbar moments later from a Brimscombe corner as the game just became more open.
With 25 minutes left on the clock Thomas pulled off two good saves to deny Moreton forward Jamie Wyatt and to keep his side 2-0 up. First, Thomas was on hand to throw an arm out and save Wyatt’s effort after the cross fell to the forward.
Then Thomas flew to his right to turn a Wyatt free kick round the post and out for a corner.
Wyatt wouldn’t be denied for long though as with his next dead ball opportunity his thunderous effort flew into the top corner off of Thomas’ hand. Game on.
Dave Woodfield nearly sealed the deal in a more convincing fashion but his 85th minute effort also crashed off the Moreton crossbar.
On the balance of play it was a deserved win for Brimscombe, whilst Moreton will feel they had chances to have potentially forced penalties.
Brimscombe move onto a trip to Lydney Town on Saturday in the Hellenic Premier, whilst Moreton host Wellington in the Division One West.
