Both managers happy as Gloucester proceed into Severn Sport Shield final

Gloucester City beat Slimbridge 2-0 in tonight’s Severn Sport Shield semi final and have progressed into Saturday’s final, after goals from Joe Hanks & Dan King.

The game started a good pace with Slimbridge’s Max Harper-Emerson looking lively in the opening exchanges. However, when City full back Tyrone Tucker-Dixon went down after no contact a lengthy delay and worried faces took over.

With the defender was stretchered off the game took a while to get going again but when it did the Gloucester City trio of Joe Hanks, Adam Page & Jake Mawford looked the most assured on the ball.

Slimbridge tried to force the opener and pressed the City defenders at an incredible rate, forcing mistakes but just lacked that killer instinct to trouble keeper Ben Taylor.

Right on half time the deadlock was broken after some neat play by Adam Page. Page swiveled about 25 yards from goal and had the presence of mind to slip in Joe Hanks, who cut onto his left foot before curling beyond Eric Edge in goal for the Swans.

A second half filled with substitutions saw Slimbridge come back into the game and after bringing Henry Birkett off the bench they suddenly had a bit more impetus to their game. Christien Turner, the centre half who signed from Brimscombe & Thrupp, was an absolute man mountain and gain plaudits from his home fans for the new season who liked what they saw.

A late second by substitute Dan King rounded off a good night’s work for the Tigers. The 18 year old taking the ball down about 30 yards from goal, cutting onto his left and curling the ball into the bottom corner. Superb from the young man.

After the game we spoke to both managers who were full of praise for their players on a testing and competitive night’s football at Thornhill Park.
