Ambrey at the double as Gloucester City Women win in Vitality Women’s FA Cup debut

Kate Ambrey’s double, including a late winner, saw Gloucester City Women mark their debut in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup win a 3-2 win over Weston-Super-Mare at New Meadow Park.

Weston took the lead inside the opening 20 minutes before Kelsey Harris levelled for Chris Hill’s side, firing home from a Zoe Gabb ball forward.

Ambrey put the hosts in front for the first time just before break, however Weston found themselves level just after half time.

City forward Ambrey slotted her second of the game in the 87th minute to book Gloucester City Women’s place in the Second Qualifying Round against Ilminster Town at Meadow Park on the 3rd October.

Following the game Gloucester City Chairman Alex Petheram spoke to Severn Sport about the win and the achievement of City’s Women’s side winning in their first Women’s FA Cup tie following their formation over the summer.

“Chris Hill [Gloucester City Women’s Manager] and the whole squad have worked so hard since their formation over the summer,” Petheram said.

“They have excellent sponsors and are growing quite a loyal fanbase already, with over 100 people watching them at Meadow Park today.

To win their first ever FA Cup game it really is a special achievement. The game was played within a great family atmosphere and they were well supported – even when going 1-0 down and they stayed calm and got their reward in the end.

A massive well done to everyone involved. Everyone within the club are very proud of the players and staff and I’d like to personally congratulate them all for making club history!” Added Petheram.

Gloucester City Women are back in action in the Gloucestershire County Women’s Football League next weekend with a trip to Abbeymead Rovers Ladies next Sunday afternoon.
