Gloucester City have signed first team duo Noah Smerdon & Jake Mawford onto contracts in a move new manager Chris Todd has described as “looking after the club.”
Smerdon burst onto the scene towards the end of last season, after then manager Marc Richards called him up from the impressive U18s side for the run in as Gloucester looked to steer away from relegation. The central midfielder has since become a first team regular this term and is highly regarded throughout the club as a key figure for future squads.
Mawford arrived in the summer from Weston-Super-Mare and after an impressive showing in pre-season, including two excellent performances in the Severn Sport Shield, he too found himself as a regular starter under the former regime.
Following Gloucester City’s 1-0 defeat at home to Bromley in the FA Cup yesterday, new manager Todd spoke live on the club’s Facebook to give his thoughts on the game and the next run of games. Regarding the duo signing contracts, Todd said:
“It is really positive for the football club [to sign the players onto contracts], there is a great buzz around the club and I want that to continue. We’ve got players that are capable of playing a higher level and you want to tie them down. It’s about giving the club some security, it’s about young players coming through of course but you have to look after the club aswell.
If you don’t get these players on contracts then they can walk away. We have to be proactive as a club about it and we have been with these two lads, who in my opinion can play a lot higher.”
Todd was also asked about the potential of new players being brought into the Tigers squad, to which he was quick confirm. Todd said:
“We have a good squad, it’s young and there’s talent within that but it needs a few more. A few added just to bulk it up really. There is quality there [already] but a few extras will make things very interesting. We are a good squad but it needs just one or two more to really kick on.”
