It was a debut to remember for Gloucester City’s new loan signing Fabien Robert, as the Frenchman opened the scoring after just 17 seconds in the Tigers’ FA Cup Second Qualifying Round victory over Plymouth Parkway.
Getting the game underway, the visitors were immediately on the back foot with Joe Parker winning the ball back. Parker found Robert on the right wing and the man on loan from Forest Green Rovers cut in on his right foot and swept home a top corner strike.
The Tigers faithful barely had time to catch their breath before they were staring down the barrel of an equaliser, after Jack Deaman conceded a penalty barely a minute later.
In a desperate lunge for the ball, Deaman clipped the heel of Mikey Williams and the referee pointed to the spot. Adam Carter sent the spot kick into the back of the net, despite the best efforts of Matt Yates.
Jamal Lawrence went close for the Tigers as he drove at the Parkway defence before lashing his effort wide of the mark during a good spell of pressure for Marc Richards’ side.
City should’ve capitalised on this pressure, as Robert flicked round the corner for Parker to run onto and chip over goalkeeper Moore who could only watch as the ball looped onto the crossbar and out of play.
Parkway sought to take advantage of the Tigers lack of composure in front of goal as they finished the half strong. However, a string of successive corners did not amount to anything as the half finished level.
The second half brought a change for City as Harry Williams replaced Chris Knowles, and his influence was immediately apparent as he drove the team forward playing in a free roam role in behind the front three.
Shortly after the hour mark, Williams would restore the lead after he blasted into the roof of the net following some neat solo work by Parker whose shot was parried by Moore.
Jake Jackson was introduced and within 10 minutes he had killed the game off. Williams grabbed an assist to add to his goal and an efficient afternoon’s work, as he threaded in Jackson one-on-one and the ex-Chippenham Town man applied a smart finish.
The game was done from that point, as Parkway became scrappy in their quest to get back into it, whilst Gloucester were more than happy to sit and control the game whilst in possession.
The Tigers now go into the Third Qualifying Round draw, which takes place on Monday 24 September at lunchtime.
