Bishops Cleeve U18s won their second league game of the season as they ground out a 2-0 win against Tuffley Rovers U18s, at Glevum Park, with striker Luke Wilkes standing out for the Mitres.
The first half saw limited goalmouth action thanks to a lack of composure from both sides, until Tuffley were able to get the ball down and saw shots fly off target from Niall Priday and Tom Connor.
Bishops Cleeve played the bulk of the first period on the break and it nearly worked just before half time when a poor clearance fell to Fraser Willmore who’s shot sailed wide from 30 yards.
The chance of the half fell to Niall Priday right on half time. After great work down the right by Kyle Rogers the ball fell to Priday just outside the six yard box, but the forward skied his effort.
Priday had the next effort of note, just before the hour mark, when he beat the offside trap to chase a ball forward. He cut back into the area before his shot was saved by Cleeve keeper Jamie Cameron.
Finn Powell then went close for Cleeve from nearly 35 yards out, as his shot swerved away from Kane Hyett’s right hand post.
Powell would go on to break the deadlock just five minutes later though. After Ethan Brook broke free down the right hand side, his cross fell perfectly for Powell to loop a header into the top corner.
It was expected for the goal to liven Tuffley up but they continued to show a lack of composure on the ball and you always sensed that Bishops Cleeve were doing just enough to see the game out.
The second came just six minutes from time after Hyett shanked his clearance straight to Luke WIlkes. The striker, who deserved a goal for his endeavor and work-rate throughout, leapt onto the loose ball and as the defender got back at him he was able to slot the ball home to secure the points for Bishops Cleeve.
Tuffley Rovers move onto next Thursday night, when they welcome newly formed Slimbridge U18s to Glevum Park for the First Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup.
The game will be live on Severn Sport on Thursday 20th September, so join Ryan Butler from 19:30 for all the action.
Bishops Cleeve’s attentions turn to next Tuesday (18th September), when they welcome Bromyard Town to Kayte Lane.
