Ryan Vincent scored a well taken double as Frampton United defeated Hellenic League side Tuffley Rovers 2-1 to advance to the 2nd round of the GFA Challenge Trophy.
The Gloucestershire County League side started well, with Nathan Dennis having an effort blocked from just inside the box.
Tuffley went down the other end and won a flurry of corners. From the second one Jake Rhodes forced a save out of Stephen Sparrow, who produced an exceptional display tonight.
Frampton began to get a lot of joy on the break, in particular down their left hand side. After Tuffley right back George Corbett was robbed on the corner of the box, the ball was pulled back to Ryan Vincent who was denied by Kane Winman in the Tuffley goal.
Just minutes later another Corbett error was leapt on by Vincent, who slotted the ball past Winman to give Frampton a deserved lead.
Tuffley grew into the game from there and saw efforts from Courtney Hamilton and Brett James, twice, sail wide.
As Tuffley pressed for an equaliser Brett James won a free kick on the edge of the D. The free kick smashed off the bar before forward Jake Rhodes was on hand to level the game going into the break.
Tuffley came out for the second half with intent but continued to produce sloppy passing in key areas. When they got it right though Stephen Sparrow proved to be difficult to beat in the Frampton goal.
Paul Carter forced Sparrow into a great save to his left hand side, with Sparrow clawing the ball out of the top corner.
Five minutes later after a slide rule pass, Ryan Vincent found himself in on goal and once again he showed incredible composure to tuck the ball under Winman to restore Frampton’s lead.
Vincent nearly completed his hattrick as he got himself hard a yard on the left hand of the box, before flashing the ball through Macaulay Herbert’s legs and across goal.
Herbert only stayed on the pitch for a few minutes, departing with what he has told Severn Sport was a tight hamstring. With Tuffley’s trip to Longlevens in the FA Vase on Friday night, Rovers correctly didn’t want to take any chances.
In the end Tuffley became desperate on the ball and threw plenty of crosses into the box, but didn’t manage to test Sparrow any further.
Frampton deserved their win and advance into the next round of the GFA Challenge Trophy after a great display. Sparrow, Vincent and Sean Lawson in particular drew the plaudits.
