Tuffley Rovers beat local rivals Longlevens 3-1 in an enthralling encounter at Saw Mills and in doing so secured their first win of the 2018/19 season.
The win comes 24 hours after we saw Tuffley Rovers’ Reserve side secured their first win of the season in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League.
After a goalless first half Longlevens took the lead after great work by right full back Ryan Dunn. Dunn found space on the right wing before drilling to the back post for left wing back Logan Roach to score his first goal in senior football.
The goal for Roach comes two days after his 18th birthday and his strike saw the game open up for both sides.
Paul Carter equalised for Tuffley when his 25 yard shot was only palmed into the net by Longlevens goalkeeper Ash Wintle.
Tuffley player/manager Mark Pritchett when close on multiple occasions, including a thunderous 30 yard effort that crashed back off the post.
Rovers took the lead just under ten minutes later when Brett James brilliantly took the ball down on the right hand side before pulling back for forward Jake Rhodes to stroke the ball home.
Brett James then got involved in the games most controversial run of events. After Kieran Squires held him off in the left back corner the Longlevens man fell to the ground with the hosts claiming the Tuffley man had elbowed the Levens defender.
The linesman on the far side spoke to the referee and a yellow card was issued to Brett James. A couple of minutes later James and Squires had a coming together in the centre circle, which lead to James appearing to slap Squires across his face. The referee didn’t see the incident and the Rovers bench reacted well and subbed James off.
Kieran Alder then saw a volley well saved by Ash Wintle as Tuffley went looking a third and Longlevens began to just come back into it.
In stoppage time as Longlevens pressed for an equaliser, Tuffley broke. The ball fell to substitute Ash Bird on the edge of the box who weaved his way through before slotting the ball home via a deflection. It was very well taken.
Tuffley lost Warren Mann to injury in the first half after a collision with Logan Roach. Mann had to be carried from the field and after the game he has gone to A&E to be checked over. It appears to be a knee injury and could be a serious one.
The win sees Tuffley move off the foot of the Hellenic Premier table, moving them up to 17th in the table. For Longlevens they stay 11th on 8 points.
On Saturday Tuffley Rovers welcome Windsor to Glevum Park, before their County trophy game against Gloucestershire County League side Frampton United on Tuesday evening. For Longlevens, they welcome free scoring Ascot United to Saw Mills on Saturday before a trip to Thornbury Town on Tuesday night.
Then next weekend we see the fifth meeting between the two sides this season when Longlevens host Tuffley Rovers in the FA Vase on Friday 14th September.
