Cirencester Town lay down serious marker for new season with re-signing

Cirencester Town have laid down a marker for the 2018/19 season by confirming that prolific striker Ben Whitehead has committed his future to the Centurions for the coming campaign.

The news was announced on Cirencester’s social media this evening and has already received the endorsements from fans and sponsors of the club and manager Charlie Griffin will be hoping his main man can replicate last season’s impressive goal tally.

The former Didcot Town striker notched nearly 40 league goals in a season that saw the Centurions narrowly miss out on what would have been a remarkable play off finish.

With the re-structured Southern League Division West now boasting the likes of Highworth Town & FA Vase winners Thatcham Town, Cirencester will be hoping that a top six finish will be achievable and with local rivals Evesham United bringing in the quantity the Centurions are aiming to bring in quality.

Earlier this summer they confirmed a number of players were staying at the Corinium and as they mentioned on their Twitter account Whitehead’s future was the one everyone wanted to know….and not just Cirencester fans.

The forward had been linked with moves to Gloucester City and even League Two side Forest Green Rovers in the last six months but he is staying a Centurion for this season at least.

Listen to the highlights of Cirencester Town’s 2-1 win against Paulton Rovers which saw Ben Whitehead notch his 30th goal of the season and was ultimately the difference on the day.

We watch Cirencester kick off their pre-season campaign at Longlevens on Friday night, kick off at Saw Mills is at 7:45pm. Follow the game live on Severn Sport’s social media.
